2 POLICING STRATEGIES The Redlands Police Department in California is an illustration of police department having successfully applied evidence-based policing within a community-oriented problem- solving framework (Bueermann, 2012). Confronted with financial issues and crime-control concerns in light of scarce resources, the department resorted to evidence-based policing enhance its effectiveness. Redland highlighted the need for adherence to scientific principles as well as incorporation of local expertise and experience. To this end, the department engaged a Ph.D. criminologist who appreciated and understood the need for their insights into various research studies to enhance or inform decision making. The Redlands Police Department also partnered with local universities in order to increase their institutional awareness as well as to have ready resource. Bueermann, (2012) denotes that the department engaged professors, graduate students, and interns while applying evidence-based approaches to solve the same crime problem within the community. The department’s policing strategies align with the evidence-based policing and the philosophy of community oriented problem-solving. Involved the local residents in solving crime problems. The department worked as a team to come up with strategies which were informed by science but also specific for the social nature and expectation of Redlands community. Some of the evidence-based approaches that were used by the Redlands Police Department include; concentrating on criminal hot spots, employing civilians for crime scene technology, using cameras along with foot patrols (Bueermann, 2012). The selection of these strategies was informed by the best knowledge base regarding crime outcomes, which underscores our determination to adopt workable means towards attaining the public safety objectives. Continuous evaluation of policing strategies is emphasized in evidence-based
3 policing. The Redlands police department agreed to frequently evaluate the success of implemented measures and alter their strategy if it did not work. The ongoing nature of this cycle enabled the department to adjust its tactics as different types of crime evolved requiring an enhanced approach in a fast-changing situation. In conclusion, the Redlands Police Department serves as a compelling example of how evidence-based policing, integrated with community- oriented problem solving, can be effectively implemented to address criminal problems
