2 Community Social Work Down the hill is a neighborhood in Kinston, North Carolina, my hometown. Low-income housing, severe poverty, and a high unemployment rate are all present in this area of the neighborhood. This region has a reputation for rapid population expansion and dependency on government aid. Unfortunately, misconceptions and discrimination have also come to be linked with this location (Rodríguez, & Ferreira, 2018). The low-income housing complex where I shot the photo is called Simon Bright Apartments, and it is supplied by the neighborhood housing authority. Unfortunately, this region is known for being dangerous due to gang activity, shootings, and drug-related offenses. After nightfall, it is not safe to be outside. In this region, it wasn't always like that. Walking the streets and playing outside or at the playground were both safe activities in the past. But over time, conditions that are hazardous as well as unsuitable for learning have been produced by poverty, unemployment, and a lack of knowledge. High dropout rates as a result of the subpar education in this region have left many people without the skills required to obtain better-paying jobs. As a result, there is a growing population that is trying to make ends meet and a need on government assistance (Bass, 2020). It's critical to acknowledge the problems that are prevalent in this area of my community. To end the cycle of inequality,
3 crime, and poverty, we must cooperate to improve education and employment prospects. Then and only then will this neighborhood actually have a chance at a better future. This neighborhood is like a close-knit family. Everyone there watches out for one another, and they range in age from the young to the old. Elderly people are very helpful to single parents since they can watch their kids when needed and even feed them. The young look out for one another as well, providing clothing, food, and water when necessary. The neighborhood is a wonderful illustration of what it means to band together and help one another under trying circumstances. Whether it's cooking a dinner, watching a kid, or just lending a listening ear, people are always prepared to assist. Despite the difficulties of daily life, this group manages to unite and support one another. This community's strength comes not only from its cohesiveness but also from its willingness to go above and beyond for one another. No matter what the circumstance, locals are always ready to offer assistance. This is evidence of the strength of community and a lesson in the power of small acts of kindness. Rebuilding and cleaning the streets, locating more youth centers, and giving the youth in this neighborhood access to opportunities and resources are the problems it faces (Bass, 2020). A social worker can assist by planning occasions and activities for young people, particularly over the summer. Additionally, they can raise awareness of the free services that are offered to low- income families via early head start and head start programs. In addition, a committee for street cleaning can be established, and young people can be assisted in leaving the streets by positive male and female role models (Rodríguez, & Ferreira, 2018). Social workers can also help young people explore their options for school, employment, and enjoyment while offering them counseling and guidance. The community can cooperate through these projects to enhance the lives of its citizens.

4 Macro practice skills are essential for addressing the challenges in communities. Three macro practice skills that can be used to help address such challenges are influencing decision makers, planning, and working with coalitions. Influencing decision makers is a skill that involves the ability to convince groups and individuals to take action and adopt certain decisions. This can be done through collaboration, by presenting new ideas and engaging in dialogue with the target audience, and through the use of various media outlets (Rodríguez, & Ferreira, 2018). Planning is another important skill for addressing community challenges. One useful approach is the PERT Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT), which involves identifying tasks that need to be accomplished, prioritizing them in order, determining how long it will take to complete the tasks, and assigning roles to individuals or groups (Bass, 2020). Working with coalitions is a skill that involves forming partnerships between different groups or organizations that have similar or different goals. This can be done by bringing together a diverse group of people and engaging them in a common effort that will benefit the community as a whole. These macro practice skills can be used to effectively address the challenges faced by communities. By taking the time to understand the needs of the community and developing a plan of action that incorporates the skills mentioned above, it is possible to make a real, positive impact on the community. Furthermore, by involving the community in the decision-making process, it is possible to ensure that the outcome is one that is beneficial to everyone in the community.
