Hello Class, For this discussion the agent of socialization that I have chosen is the family unit. Growing up in the 1980’s, the definition and role each individual in the family unit played has changed over time. As a child, the father was the one who was strong and provided for the family and the mother was the one who took care of the family and the home. Controversial issues were spoken of behind closed doors and same sex marriages were considered taboo. Parents are the children’s first teachers. Guiding and teaching family ways and beliefs. As a child grows, the main example they have to learn from is the parental unit. Over time those roles have changed and so has the family unit. Now it is the norm to discuss controversial issues, gender roles in the family unit have changed, and what is normal is what seems to be deemed acceptable by the family unit.
