Tiffany Simms Lesson 11 Assignment July 16, 2023 Please review the following article: Doing Family Therapy as a New Social Worker: The Do's and Don'ts. While this article mentions family therapy, please consider the skills of a beginning Social Worker/Case Manager as you read this article. After reviewing this article, please consider the following in your discussion post: Please share your thoughts on how you can apply this information as a Social Worker. What do you think are some of the benefits/challenges in working with families? To receive full credit, you will need to post one substantial post. Each discussion post should be a minimum of 250 words or one page. Provide two substantial responses to your classmate’s posts. These responses should also be substantial and provide thoughtful reflection. Your initial discussion post should be posted by Wednesday and your two responses due by Sunday. So looking at that article, it gave a lot of good examples of what to do and not do when starting out as a social worker. One of the examples was Do not tell them what to do, even if you are just being helpful. You need to work with the clients and their families to get the services that they want and need. Another one was do not get dragged into the chaos. When you go to a families home, it can be very easy to get dragged into the chaos of what is happening in the family home. Before starting get a feel for what role each person plays and what the goal is for the family therapy sessions. If the family starts to get out of hand, bring them back with what the therapy should be about. Another one would be, don't assume a families dynamics, ask the client who do they feel is their family, is their family close? This will give a good insight into how the client thinks and how the family is. The benefits of working with families is if the family is willing and helpful you can come up with plans and coping techniques that allows the client to rely on their family for support. Looking into how a family interacts and works with each other can also show how the family is, is it a healthy, is the family strict, what are their beliefs and cultural views about family. This can all help with understanding and connecting with a client.
