2 Reflecting on Experience Reflect on the course materials and your practice. What theoretical basis conceptualizes your approach to practice? Are there tenants of your critical theory, practice, or social change model in your practice? How would or do these approaches impact and or enhance your effectiveness in practice? Reflecting on the course materials and my practice, I concluded that my approach to the practice relates to the client-centered approach. The theoretical basis of my approach to my practice stresses clients have control of their destinies. Clients, therefore, have the capacity for growth and self-actualization as long as they have motivation. It is up to a social worker to provide a conducive and non-judgmental environment for the clients for self-exploration. Moreover, I observed the existence of critical theory, just practice, and the social change model in my work. The critical theory perspective encourages me to recognize the different social injustices that different clients may end up going through ( Tyson, 2023) . The critical theory, therefore, encourages me to work towards overcoming various social issues such as oppression and inequality, helping to create a society where people do not have to worry about various social injustices. The Just Practice approach matches my practice by urging me to focus on my professional obligation towards social justice ( Finn, 2020) . To apply the just practice approach effectively, I have to use critical and creative thinking to help understand how different experiences affect a client and give the various experiences meaning. I understand the client better through this approach and can provide the best help possible. The social change model matches the aim of bringing change to the client and the community ( Pareja-Cano et al., 2023) . In most cases, clients are affected by various societal
3 issues; therefore, by considering the community when dealing with the clients, I can offer long- term solutions to the clients and promote community well-being. The different approaches enhance my practice in various ways. The different approaches help me view clients’ issues from different points of view. Combining the different perspectives with the client-centered approach helps ensure that a client has a better understanding of themselves and their community, hence coming up with long-term solutions for their problems. In a case where, I am dealing with a patient facing racism, I would use the client-centered approach to assist the patient understand themselves and how racism could affect them; hence, helping them be more accepting of their race despite the discrimination they go through. I would use the critical theory perspective to investigate the societal factors that encourage racism hence coming up with an effective way to help fight against racism ( Tyson, 2023) . Additionally, I would use the just practice approach to help deal with a situation where a specific community faces oppression. The approach matches my urge to fight against oppression and discrimination ( Finn, 2020) . It hence would help a great deal in dealing with an oppressed community by advocating for equality. The social change model would be helpful when engaging the community to help address various challenges that clients may face ( Pareja-Cano et al., 2023) . Some of the problems affecting the clients are from the community; therefore, I can develop long-term solutions by engaging the community in a client’s intervention. At the same time, being able to identify some of the main issues in a community hence coming up with solutions to help promote the community’s well-being. To sum up, through the course material and my practice as a social worker, I have learned the importance of incorporating the client-centered approach with different perspectives such as

4 critical theory, just practice, and social change model to a client and the community. Incorporating a client-centered approach with different perspectives helps significantly improve my practice since I can develop better solutions for the clients and improve society. Through reflecting on my course work, I can apply various concepts that I have learned in my practice hence ensuring to provide the best possible services to the clients.
