Research Paper Topic Proposal Research question: Do individuals in foster care have a higher suicide rate compared to those not in foster care? Thesis: Individuals who are currently in foster care or have once been a foster care child are more likely to experience mental or physical trauma which puts them at higher risk for suicide or suicidal thoughts. My topic focuses on the statistical side of whether foster children have a higher rate of suicide compared to children who are not apart of the foster care system. The statistics that are available include actually committing suicide, attempted suicide, and suicidal thoughts. Foster children are more likely to suffer from traumas while they were young kids that are still prevalent when they are grown adults because they never received emotional help with the stress of not feeling loved, being abused, and the potential of bouncing from foster home to foster home. I decided to choose this topic because my sister has recently become a foster parent within the last year. She received twin boys who were malnourished, underdeveloped physically, intellectually behind in learning, and were physically abused. In the short time span of a year, the twins have made huge improvements intellectually and physically. I wonder if they remember their home they come from. The twins are three years old and don’t form any sentences or really even talk for that matter and so we do not really know what the boys remember from their home. My sister being a foster parent and hopefully soon to be adoptive parent has really opened my eyes to some of the situations that foster children do go through and I can see how that could emotionally mess with someone’s head as a child or adolescent. These boys are young, so we all can only hope that they do not remember the conditions and family they came from so it does not cause any emotional damage to them when they are older.
