WEEKLY CRITICAL ANALYSIS Weekly Critical Analysis Fahad Khawaji February 24, 2023 1
WEEKLY CRITICAL ANALYSIS Weekly Critical Analysis The reading “Does Race Matter in Residential Segregation?" by Emerson et al. (2001) seeks to understand the underlying causes of residential segregation. The results show that the composition of Asians and Hispanics in a neighborhood does not matter to the Whites. However, the composition of Blacks in a neighborhood has a profound effect on Whites when it comes to home searching. The prevalence of Blacks in a neighborhood is associated with high crime, low housing values, and low quality education by the Whites (Emerson et al., 2001). There is real evidence of the arguments made by the author in real life scenarios. Research has shown that Whites play a major role in enforcing residential segregation through different actions. Although most minorities prefer to live in mixed neighborhoods, statistics show that they tend to live in areas where their own race is dominant. The reason why Blacks might avoid White neighborhoods is due to the hostility they might get from White neighbors. A good example is when in 2021, a group of armed men stormed a Black home in search of a missing teen. This was a racially motivated attack just because a Black neighbor lived in the neighborhood, the family was seen capable of abduction (McLaughlin, 2021). To make matters worse, the armed men were arrested and later acquitted which shows how racism is institutionalized in America. Another good example is the shooting of Trayvon Martin, which was racially motivated (McLaughlin, 2021). Due to this stereotypic association of Blacks with crimes, Whites tend to largely avoid housing in areas that are dominated by Blacks. Additionally, these neighborhoods 2
WEEKLY CRITICAL ANALYSIS are deprived of private and public investments in important sectors such as education and health. This is the reason why Whites tend to avoid these areas which further deprives these neighborhoods of any meaningful developments. The fact that Asian and Hispanics are considered to have low probability of crime explains why Whites have no issue living in areas inhabited by them. This kind of residential segregation is likely to continue unless the government does meaningful development in the health and education sector in neighborhoods inhabited by the minorities. 3
