INCIDENTS OF INEQUALITY 2 Scenario #1: Ethinicity discrimination. 1) Summarize the incident. 2) How might this situation affect the victim? 3) How might it affect the offending person or institution? 4) How do situations like this affect society as a whole? Write your 200-word paragraph for scenario 1 below: According to the article, “Woman says she was denied job in Chesterfield because name too 'ghetto'; company says it was hacked”, a lady named Hermeisha Robinson applied for a customer support role on an internet portal called indeed.com (Moore, 2018). She was eventually issued an e-mail stating that her name was "too ghetto." The email message of refusal appeared to be from someone working at Mental Health, who stated that new employees with "ghetto" names were not considered. Hermeisha was issued an apology after the case became public, purportedly for receiving an email from a hacker, which raised security issues (Veenstra, 2011). Ms. Robinson expressed her anguish and how, in light of the apparent security breach, she is now questioning her own identity (Moore, 2018). This prejudice has resulted in self- esteem difficulties for Hermeshia and the name she was given at birth. The company has humiliated her for a portion of her identity over which she has no control and which is an integral part of who she is. Individuals have chosen to seek jobs on websites other than indeed.com, and the site has now gained an unfavorable reputation (Moore, 2018). Despite the possibility that a hacker was to blame, the event has negatively impacted the site's reputation, making users more hesitant to disclose their personal information on a profile or use it to search for employment. When Facebook posts about the event started to circulate, many people expressed
INCIDENTS OF INEQUALITY 3 disappointment in what had transpired. It inspired others to come together and defend Herneisha, telling her that her name was beautiful and that she should embrace it since there was nothing wrong with it. Unfortunately, certain people in society will always concur with and imitate the offender's inappropriate behavior. Scenario # 2: Gender discrimination. 1) Summarize the incident. 2) How might this situation affect the victim? 3) How might it affect the offending person or institution? 4) How do situations like this affect society as a whole? Write your 200-word paragraph for scenario 2 below: Women frequently find themselves getting the short end of the stick despite the existence of certain labor rules and regulations. An article titled "Until men bear children, women must not bear the costs of reproductive capacity: accommodating pregnancy in the workplace to achieve equal employment opportunities" that I came across mentions how employers acknowledge that if a woman is pregnant or has children, it lowers her chances of promotion (Oyoung, 2013). Due to the fact that many women have children and do not have equal access to employment opportunities or compensation, this might have an influence on their lives. In addition to being financially responsible for maintaining their family alone, some women often lack recognition for their skills and accomplishments. If a woman had four children and a college degree, a man applying for the same post would be a stronger prospect (Oyoung, 2013). Given that women are more likely than men to become mothers at some point in their life, this clearly shows signs of inequity (Veenstra, 2011). Additionally, businesses who forbid these women from applying for jobs or advancing within the firm risk losing talented female

INCIDENTS OF INEQUALITY 4 workers who may greatly benefit the business. The issue with the inequity in this circumstance is that these companies fire women and deny them their legal rights and fair employment opportunities (Oyoung, 2013). These businesses are more likely to hire a guy, regardless of his level of competence.
