2 Reflection with Dan In my role as a youth support worker and case manager at the Youth Center, I recently had my first session with Dan, an 18-year-old who is grappling with a multitude of challenges, both on a personal level and within his family. This reflection aims to delve into the key takeaways from this initial session and contemplate how we can enhance our future interactions with Dan and other clients who are navigating similar issues. There are multiple dominant masculine presence in domestic households (CMSA, 2013). This insight into his family dynamics is crucial in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the origins of his conflicts and his persistent feelings of not quite fitting in. It became evident that Dan's history of experiencing bullying in school had led to the development of social anxiety, which, in turn, had caused academic difficulties. Recognizing the profound impact of these experiences on his self-esteem and social skills is essential for us to provide the appropriate support and guidance. One significant obstacle people face is family resistance to seeking professional help (Australia Mental Health Consumer Outcomes Task Force, 1991). Addressing this resistance from his family will be paramount in developing an effective support plan tailored to Dan's unique needs. Furthermore, it's worth noting that Dan has a deep passion for art and music, even though he perceives these interests as mere hobbies. Acknowledging these passions and assisting him in exploring potential career paths in these creative fields can be a pivotal step in boosting his self-esteem and motivation. Another significant insight we gleaned from our session is that Dan has a closer and more trusting relationship with his mother. It is important to trust and open communication with clients (Global Social Service Workforce Alliance, n.d.). In our future sessions, I am committed to
3 continuing to encourage him to express his feelings and concerns without reservation. Additionally, we learned that Dan has been diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression and is currently on medication, a decision that his father strongly opposes. To bridge this gap, it may be beneficial to provide information and education to both Dan and his family about the pivotal role medication plays in mental health treatment and his path to recovery. Dan's revelation about his sexual orientation marks a significant milestone in his journey. In the forthcoming sessions, it is incumbent upon us to create a safe and supportive environment where he feels comfortable discussing this aspect of his life. Equipping him with the tools and support he needs to navigate potential conversations with his family will be crucial. Encouraging Dan to engage in activities he genuinely enjoys, such as art workshops, and facilitating connections with peers who share his interests can help him establish a robust support network beyond the confines of his family. As we move forward, I will collaborate closely with Dan to set achievable goals, explore his career interests, and delve into his concerns regarding changing his course at TAFE, ensuring that he feels empowered and in control of his future. In the session with Dan provided invaluable insights into his struggles and aspirations. To enhance our future interactions with him and others facing similar challenges, we must prioritize building trust, addressing family dynamics, and guiding him towards a more positive and fulfilling path. Every session will serve as an opportunity to further support Dan on his journey towards improved mental health and personal growth.
