Hello Class, The statement: Sociologists often describe social change as the only constant in society would be referring to the fact that social changes are constantly happening and more than likely always will. Simply meaning that change is inevitable and cannot be stopped. There have been numerous social movements and social changes throughout my lifetime and one of many of the bigger social changes and movements that has occurred in my lifetime would be the legalization of marijuana. When I was growing up, it was not only considered to be just as bad as cocaine, so were the people who were associated with using it. After decades of the war on drugs and the opposing side fighting for legalization and decriminalization of marijuana, in 2012, Washington State had made the decision to legalize recreational use of marijuana. This was a movement that led to the passing of a bill that would “give states the right to enact their own policies and incentivize states to clear the criminal records of people with low-level marijuana offenses” Seattletimes.com, 2023). This has also led to the medicinal use and legalization and decriminalization of marijuana in other states across the U.S. This movement has led to a social 180-degree turnaround. It has now become widely accepted, used, and has become part of the everyday normal activity for many people. Once a hidden taboo that people were looked down on for taking part in, was only talked about among small amounts of people and done behind closed doors, is now an activity that is done publicly, widely accepted, very popular, and spoken of as a regular part of one’s day.
