2 Common theories of stratification are discussed, including functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, and intersectionality. Using these ideas, the discussion reflects on three problems that low-income elderly women may face and how their socioeconomic status affects their perspective on death and dying. According to the functionalist view, society is structured as it is to ensure its continued cohesion. Women in impoverished situations as they age face a range of potential difficulties, according to research (Brown & Homan, 2022). Poor older women may have restricted access to medical care because of the cost. They may lack access to affordable health care or insurance, increasing the probability that serious health issues will go untreated and reducing their lifespan. Due to the inherent insecurity of their economic condition, women of retirement age from low-income homes may struggle financially. They might have problems paying for basics like food, clothing, and heat. When money is tight, it can take a toll on a person's mental and physical health (Farhadi & Länsivaara, 2022). Social inequality and power struggles are fundamental concepts in conflict theory. The following issues arise for low-income elderly women if they implement this approach: Sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination Due to their age and social status, poor older women are often the target of prejudice and discrimination. Potential barriers to obtaining productive jobs, fair wages, and other social services may add insult to injury by exacerbating their already dire financial situation. Social inequality has a particularly negative impact on the longevity of low-income elderly women. Uncertain economic conditions, a lack of social support, and a lack of access to healthcare have all been associated with worse health and lower life expectancy (Farhadi & Länsivaara, 2022). Additionally, the practice of delamination among poor elderly women might
3 shape their view on death. They might have an even more challenging time acquiring end-of-life care. if they cannot afford a funeral or cannot have one held in line with their cultural or personal preferences. Finally, through the lens of the four stratification theories, the difficulties faced by older women living in poverty are brought into focus. References Brown, T., & Homan, P. (2022).
