Please review the following article: Doing Family Therapy as a New Social Worker: The Do's and Don'ts. While this article mentions family therapy, please consider the skills of a beginning Social Worker/Case Manager as you read this article. After reviewing this article, please consider the following in your discussion post: Please share your thoughts on how you can apply this information as a Social Worker. What do you think are some of the benefits/challenges in working with families? To receive full credit, you will need to post one substantial post. Each discussion post should be a minimum of 250 words or one page. Provide two substantial responses to your classmate’s posts. These responses should also be substantial and provide thoughtful reflection. Your initial discussion post should be posted by Wednesday and your two responses due by Sunday. I think I can apply this information when I start working with families. I liked the way the article was written directly to new social workers and gave insight on some of the things they suggest. There was so much information in this article that will come in handy such as: countertransference, meeting the family where they are not where you think they should be, cultural differences and more. I think one of the challenges with working with family will be not getting caught in the Chaos. The article mentioned that you shouldn't chase chaos. I definitely think that if you aren't self aware, it'd be easy for the family to pull you into their chaos. I also think this can add a lot of unnecessary stress to yourself. I also think a challenge would be when talking with one family member and listening to their side, then moving to another family member, spotting the lies. I'm sure instinct would want to say something, but of course you don't. You have to work with the clients to get them to tell you the full truth. I also think it would be hard when you get majority of the family making progress then having another member try to unravel it. With that being said, I still think there are benefits to working with a family. I think it would be amazing to watch families grow and heal together. To have them implement interventions you've helped provide to be able to improve their family dynamics. I think it would be beneficial to see the family interact with one another regardless of how that first interaction goes, then to
continually see them getting better each time you meet with them. I think it can be hard yet rewarding, which makes it worth it.
