2 Industrial revolution was a time when the United States was going through major economic and social changes that began in the late 18 th century and continued to the 19 th century. During this time there was a shift from manual labor to machine –based manufacturing. There was series of technological advancement that led to significant changes in transportation, communicating and other industries. Not only were there industrial reforms but also political and social reforms America which were brought by rise in social consequences. This period was known as the progressive era. The progressive movement in U.S was a time when there of social and political reforms which took place in 19 th and 2oth century ( Branco, 2019) . The progressive movement impacted Americans different ways. First there was an increase focus on social justice to address the injustices that were rampant in the society. The movement believed that the government had a responsibility to ensure that everyone enjoys basic human rights such as education, healthcare and fair labor practices. There was increase in welfare programs such as Children’s Bureau which worked to promote children welfare and prevent child ( Branco, 2019). There was also rise of a movement by industrial workers to fight for better working conditions. The increase focus on social reforms led to rise of reformist and movement like the rise of labor movement which aimed at better pay and working conditions for workers ( Branco, 2019) . There was also rise of settlement houses such as Hull House by reformist Jane Addams which acted as a safe house for the poor and the vulnerable ( Progressive Era to New Era, 1900- 1929 : U.S. history primary source timeline : classroom materials at the Library of Congress : library of Congress, n.d. ). Americans started viewing these issues such as poverty, crime and
3 inequality as systemic that required collective effort to solve. There was an increase emphasizes on need for equitable education for all citizens regardless of their socioeconomic status. There was call to expand public education and establish vocational training programs. Public health department and campaigns were created to promote public health and hygiene through improved sanitation and hygiene practices. The progressive movement impacted political and civic engagement. People worked towards promoting greater citizen participation in the political process which led to adoption of progressive reforms such as direct election of senators through 17 th amendment and women suffrage ( Progressive Era to New Era, 1900-1929 : U.S. history primary source timeline : classroom materials at the Library of Congress : library of Congress, n.d. ). Citizens were allowed to directly vote for candidates rather than rely on political bosses. There was introduction of legislative reforms which gave citizens more mandate in regard to law reforms and impeachment of elected officials. There was also the creating of the Federal Reserve System which became a central banking system for stabilizing the economy and regulating money supply ( Progressive Era to New Era, 1900-1929 : U.S. history primary source timeline : classroom materials at the Library of Congress : library of Congress, n.d. ).. Women suffrage movement introduced a number of political reforms such as the amendment of the constitution in 1920 which enabled women to vote ( Progressive Era to New Era, 1900-1929 : U.S. history primary source timeline : classroom materials at the Library of Congress : library of Congress, n.d. ).. The suffrage movement paved way for other women movements that aimed to establish political equality for women in America. In conclusion, the progressive Era was a time of significant social and political reforms in United States. There were wide efforts to address social, economic and political changes facing
