2 Week 5: Responses to Videos The documentary titled “People Like Us: Social Class in America” featured different families in a bid to demonstrate the adverse effects of class and poverty on every aspect of life. Individuals struggling to overcome poverty have minimal access to quality education, decent housing, and quality healthcare services. Tammy Crabtree’s family serves as a clear example of a white family living in rural America without access to decent housing. Tammy works for long hours doing menial jobs and earning a meager salary. Poverty affects each element of her life because it compels her to accept low-paying jobs and a substandard lifestyle. Tammy reveals that she struggles to bring up her family, and her children express their feelings regarding their mother’s job and overall living standards. One of the sons considers himself as belonging to a higher social class as a form of escapism from the realities in his life. Poverty limits access to desirable lifestyles and compels individuals to live in disadvantaged neighborhoods. The container housing in a rural setting reveals the stresses and pressures of living in poverty. Based on my predictions, it will be difficult for Tammy’s family to make remarkable progress by registering an upward movement. Between 2001 and 2013, Tammy remained stuck in the same position because of the limited access to opportunities, such as a better-paying job. For this reason, poverty is likely to hinder any progress that Tammy intends to make to improve her lifestyle and offer her children a better future. My predictions regarding Tammy’s family came true because she was unable to make any progress. In 12 years, she continued working and earning a meager pay that made it impossible to afford a better lifestyle. The family still lives in a disadvantaged neighborhood, and Tammy feels disappointed that her life goals of creating a better life and becoming a teacher have proven impossible. The case of Tammy’s family demonstrates that many poverty-stricken Americans cannot achieve even their most miniature dreams because they

3 lack access to quality healthcare and a decent lifestyle. Tammy continues to work hard and walks to work irrespective of her health conditions. It is heartbreaking for the family because the level of income does not increase over the years. Tammy’s family expands over time, and she must take care of her grandchildren as well. It is possible to understand Tammy’s story by paying attention to the persistent inequalities affecting low-income people in the United States. Specifically, a critical analysis of poverty and social class will reveal the complexities that hinder the poor from accessing better opportunities. For example, it becomes difficult to understand why the poor must embrace low-paying jobs without any potential pay rise or benefits from a functional perspective. Unfortunately, these are the realities that govern the lives of many poor Americans. Other concepts regarding inequalities brought about by the class system help demonstrate the persistent struggles in Tammy’s family.
