What do you think are some of the benefits/challenges in working with families? To receive full credit, you will need to post one substantial post. Each discussion post should be a minimum of 250 words or one page. Provide two substantial responses to your classmate’s posts. These responses should also be substantial and provide thoughtful reflection. Your initial discussion post should be posted by Wednesday and your two responses due by Sunday. After reading the article entitled "Doing Family Therapy as a New Social Worker: The Do's and Don'ts", I learned a lot about important skills I should consider when beginning as a new social worker as well as what to do and what not to do. In regard of what to do, I learned the importance of understanding a family's identity, respecting the family's current state, developing a therapeutic alliance, and developing a strategic treatment plan. As far as what not to do, I learned don't chase chaos, don't judge the family's skill set, don't ignore cultural influence, and don't underestimate your countertransference. I can apply this information as a Social Worker by looking how families identify themselves, developing a concrete treatment plan that details each family member's goal for treatment, meeting a family where they are, join with the family to enable it's members to experiences new ways to function, applying the key aspects of a positive alliance, providing cultural assessments to families, and making sure treatment plans are carried out strategically by conducting an assessment, providing a diagnosis, creating goals, and termination. I think some of the benefits of working with families are being able to improve the functioning of families by helping them work through difficult times as well as keeping them from harm. When it comes to challenges in working with families, I think it would be important for me to be mindful of my own familial experiences so that I do not force or undermine a families treatment. In addition, managing my own anxiety and the family's chaos would be another challenge to navigate through as a social worker.
