Social Justice Essay: Show Racism the Red Card Student Name Institution Date
Introduction Show Racism the Red Card is one of the United Kingdom's leading anti-racism organizations that was established in January 1996, following aid and donation by Shaka Hislop, the then Newcastle United FC goalkeeper. The organization is a non-profit social justice organization that was launched in Newcastle after a group of young people held a racist campaign against Shaka, unbeknownst to them that he was a football player for Newcastle United, and later headed to ask for an autograph from him. The organization has been in operation for more than 25 years and has been applauded over the years for its constant commitment to deal with and end racial discrimination in the UK. The purpose of this organization has been to create awareness, critique hate and stereotypes, stand against any form of racial abuse and discrimination, and foster a culture of equality and inclusion in society. The organization also aims to enlighten people about the impact and disadvantages of racial discrimination, especially in the football world. Over time, this organization has evolved and adapted to numerous changes in culture and societal attitudes in the country as it strengthens its ability and broadens its scope to deal with social, political, and cultural issues impacting society such as discrimination related to class, sex, and sexuality. The purpose of this essay is to discuss this organization in light of its background, successes, achievements, and challenges that steer or hinder its effectiveness in ending racial discrimination and other social challenges. Origin and Development As noted earlier, Show Racism the Red Card is a nonprofit organization that was founded by Shaka Hislop, the former goalkeeper of Newcastle United, in 1996, following an outburst and racial abuse by a group of young people that was targeting him within the football ground. In response to their racial discrimination and actions against him, Shaka, together with other
footballers as well as anti-racist activists, opted to develop a campaign that steered players and managers to put on red cards when matches were on as a means of protesting and seeking for an end to racism, especially against footballers and soccer sports in general. The group incessantly put in red cards during matches and this symbolic act became so popular that the media got attentive and that is how the organization was formed with the purpose of challenging stereotypes and racial behaviors against people of color within the football world and the entire society. Football was mainly used as a vehicle to steer change by starting with the organization of anti-racism conferences and events in social settings such as schools and football stadiums where professional footballers from all divides were used to advocate for change by delivering anti- racism messages and posts to young people and fans in general. Initially, the organization began by providing workshops and educational resources to young people in their schools, which was excellently done through football and other creative means as a way of reaching out and spreading the messages against racism (Blaya, 2019). The organization then realized the impact of racism is beyond football boundaries and extended its efforts to deal with other social issues like class, gender, and sexual discrimination. They generated a concerted effort to collaborate with other interested organizations and activist groups to pool sufficient resources and organize workshops and events to spread information concerning the dangers of discrimination. Cultural and Societal Changes Since its inception, Show Racism the Red Card has been constantly developing and adapting to the UK's cultural and societal changes, and that has enabled it to effectively address issues related to racism. The organization has evolved and developed in various ways. First, it has been keen on the trends, patterns, and evolving nature state of racism and put forward

appropriate measures to deal with modern forms of racial discrimination. Initially, the mission was intended to deal with open and obvious racism but, now, due to the fast-paced shift in the social paradigm, the organization has also shifted its pattern of understanding and addressing the systemic form of racism. It has recognized and is practicing the inclusion of social constructs such as education, fashion and modeling, and celebrity to address and deal with covert forms of racial discrimination. The organization has expanded its scope in dealing with covert forms of racism by focusing not only on schools but also on community groups, youth clubs, sports clubs, and even work environments to provide necessary anti-racist awareness and equip everyone, regardless of their backgrounds, with necessary knowledge concerning racism and its dangers in the society (Cole, 2022). The organization has also adapted to the cultural changes in the country to fit in the agenda of ending racism. The UK is currently a diverse and multicultural nation with individuals with varied perspectives about others and life, experiences, and challenges. Show Racism the Red Card has recognized the need to offer tailored awareness packages to address and handle issues related to cultural variance in the country. Through the concept of equality and inclusivity, the organization has managed to engage with people from various backgrounds, and that has steered a nationwide dialogue on the importance of togetherness and embracing cultural diversity. One way that the organization has adapted to changes in the UK's cultural shifts involves the case of the late 90s when MacPherson's report shed light on the institutional racism that marred the police force after the gruesome murder of Stephen Lawrence (Blaya, 2019). The incident sparked debates and discussions around the country concerning the rising cases of racism. The issue prompted the urgent call for campaigns and efforts to address racial abuse in
the country and Show Racism the Red Card came through and heavily engaged in the process to challenge the ongoing racial concerns by spearheaded by the youth in school and social settings. The organization made a significant stride to impede the rising cases of racial threats and behaviors by collaborating with high-profile football professionals and sports organizations to leverage their influence and use appropriate platforms to reach out to the youth and society. Through such a collaborative approach, the organization has managed to build rapport with large target populations and initiated lasting impact. Among the impactful campaigns that the organization has created include the "Wear Red Day" initiative that involves football clubs encouraging their fan to put on red garments as a means of standing against racism (Seikkula, 2019). The rise and increase in usage of social media platforms have enabled the organization to adjust and adapt to the new norm by spreading the campaigns against racism through various platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram where a wide range of target population can be found. The online space has enabled the organization to steer up conversations and interactions regarding social issues including racism. Moreover, the organization has managed to recognize the rise in social justice movements like those for gender equality, sex workers, and the LGBTQ community, through which it has interconnected the agenda of ending racial discrimination. Roles and Activities Currently, Show Racism the Red Card is playing a key role in advocating for racial equality and planning to end any form of discrimination across the United Kingdom. By supporting clubs, schools, and other social settings with necessary resources, the organization is penetrating every inhabitant, homestead, and community hence reaching masses annually. Some
of the resources they offer include educational resources, workshops, films, and financial aid to help challenge stereotypes and encourage inclusive values. Footballers and other partnered groups use interactive methods and technologies to reach out to people and act as role models. Evaluation of Success The success of this organization is evident in terms of the impact it has had on the youth and society at large. Through its workshops and resources, the organization has managed to reach a large audience spread the message, and influence the youth to stand against racial discrimination and instead embrace empathy, and inclusivity (Clark et al., 2018). According to the report and feedback on behavioral change, the organization is widely applauded for empowering youths to challenge discrimination and use football and other social amenities as tools for unity and love. Moreover, their work has greatly prompted debates and discussions across the country and influence policy-making. Several organizations have joined hands in advocating for anti-racist behaviors, courtesy of their influence. Challenges Despite the positive strides in bringing change, Show Racism the Red Card has faced many challenges that impede its efforts to end racism. First, the increase in usage of social media has exacerbated the spread of bullying, hate, and racial discrimination which calls for the organization to adopt a new approach to deal with digital racism (Dixon et al., 2016). Therefore, the organization is always on a change and adaptation trajectory to match and win against any form of discrimination emanating from society. Secondly, the organization is applauded for its ability and success in reaching young people but it fails to reach the elderly who still hold and are capable of transferring discriminatory behaviors to their children. There is a need for the

organization to adjust its educational and awareness programs to cover all ages and give lasting solutions. Conclusion Summarily, Show Racism the Red Card is one of the UK's nonprofit organizations that has shown significant steps in addressing racial discrimination in the country. The organization has brought positive changes in society which currently has a positive view of diversity and inclusion in institutions and the community at large. It has managed to reach a wide range of people and condemned racial discrimination, encouraged empathy, and fostered inclusion.
