THE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION 2 The Nonprofit Organization The Melton Center is a nonprofit community center geared towards improving the quality of life of the West Chester community. The center is located in Pennsylvania and offers a variety of educational, recreational, cultural and civic services that targets adults and youth. Ever since it was introduced, the center has helped to shape the lives of many youths by helping them acquire important life skills that would allow them to fend for themselves. The center has contributed immensely towards providing education needs to marginalized groups in society. The founder of the center saw the need of addressing inequality in the society by developing a center that would allow the local community to access education as well as other recreational facilities. As a result, the community would be empowered developing a culture of resilience and offering help to underprivileged people in society. The goal of this center is to foster a greater understanding in the society through education. By ensuring that the community gets the great equalizer, the society would be empowered promoting cooperation among all the citizens. Initially, the center was designed to cater to the educational needs of individuals who were marginalized by gender, race and economic status. By targeting this group, the center would work towards uniting the community as well as bridging the inequalities that were evident in the society. The center has grown and diversified its mandate into offering other services to adults. All these have been able to create a cohesive and empowered community. Theory Application The Government-Nonprofit Partnership Theory is a theory that can best explain why this center was established and still exists to date. The theory asserts that the government might not

THE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION 3 always provide to the needs of all the citizens and partners with certain institutions to reach out to society. According to this theory, the government establishes the right environment that allows the nonprofit organization to provide services that ought to be provided by the government. This kind of partnership ensures that better services are provided to the citizens and individuals who are in dire need of help are easily identified. It is through such partnerships that community centers can thrive and have been able to help different communities to address certain challenges in identified areas. This theory best explains the existence of the Melton Center within The West Chester Community. The center was established as a result of government failure to address issues of inequalities in society. The fact that the government would not help all the people and the growing challenges that are faced by other communities throughout the country, it was right to establish a community center that would address the problems of the local community within this region. It is for this reason that the community center was established and has been at the forefront in providing education needs to the underprivileged in society. The partnership with the government aimed at improving the local communities ensured that this center would operate and receive government support. The success of other community centers and other nonprofit organization is best explained through this theory. The government will always pursue avenues aimed at empowering the people and fixing inequalities. As long as these problems exist in society, the nonprofit organization will always be called upon to intervene.
