Report
This week, you will practice creating a hypothesis, and independent and dependent variables. First, write the research question you finalized from Week 02 on your topic area of choice. Next, propose a hypothesis, identify the type of hypothesis, and define the independent variable and dependent variables. Please create your own response within this forum and organize your post like this. However, please note that this represents the minimum requirement and lacks depth. For instance, there is room for improvement in the research question's formulation. Area of interest: Homelessness Scope: Currently, over half a million people are homeless in America (National Alliance to End Homelessness, 2015). On any given night, over 100,000 people are homeless in Fairfield County, Connecticut (Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness, 2016). Individuals who are homeless are at risk of infectious disease, poor nutrition, mental health issues, violence, and a range of other issues (Institute of Medicine, 2012). Research question: What intervention strategies reduce health risks to adults experiencing homelessness? Hypothesis: Safe, supportive housing programs that offer comprehensive health, mental health, and substance abuse treatment and the opportunity for relationship building reduce health risks associated with homelessness. Hypothesis type: Directional hypothesis
Independent variable: Supportive housing intervention Dependent variables: Infectious disease, poor nutrition, untreated mental health, safety concerns THE RESEARCH QUESTION IS "How have poverty rates and trends in the United States changed from 1990 to 2023, with an emphasis on understanding the factors that have contributed to these changes?" THIS IS WHAT MY PROFESSOR HAD TO SAY Your approach to the steps outlined for your Literature Review assignment is a good start. However, there are a few areas where you can enhance the clarity and specificity of your responses. Here's feedback on each step: Step 1: Identify the Topic Area and Research Question Your research question is a good starting point, but there are ways to further refine and improve it to make it more specific, focused, and actionable. Here are some suggestions for improving your research question: Specify the Type of Poverty: Instead of using the general term "poverty rates," specify the type of poverty you are interested in. For example, you could focus on "income poverty rates" or "child poverty rates" if those are the specific aspects you want to investigate. This adds clarity to your research question.
Narrow the Time Frame: The time frame from 1990 to 2023 is too broad. Consider narrowing it down to a more specific period or key milestones within this timeframe. This will make your research more manageable and allow for a deeper analysis. Clarify the Factors: While you mention understanding the factors contributing to changes in poverty rates, it would be helpful to specify which factors you are particularly interested in. Are you looking at economic policies, demographic changes, employment trends, or other specific factors? Providing more clarity on this aspect will guide your literature search and analysis. Consider Adding a Geographical Focus: If your research is specifically about poverty in the United States, it might be valuable to specify if you are interested in a particular region or if you intend to examine national trends. This can add depth to your research question. THIS WAS WHAT I DID IN WEEK 2 Area of interest: Poverty Scope: Poverty is commonly defined as the lack of a certain amount of material possessions or money. It is a human condition in which people lack adequate access to necessities such as income, food, clothing, shelter, health care, security, education, etc." Poverty can also be defined broadly, including, for example, the recognition that it includes deprivations in health, education, participation, and security, in addition to a lack of income. Research Question: What are the most effective policy interventions to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable economic development in low-income communities? Reference:
