2 The Social Gerontology Theories In the case of Marie Cipriani, the feminist theory best suits the situation due to its suggestion that gender plays a significant role in understanding an aging individual's experience. The theory argues that gender is an essential social stratification factor, which makes it fundamental. It entails attendant privilege, power, and status that produce disparities and inequalities through the elderly life’s course. Notably, it emphasizes that for us to understand aging individuals, we must take gender into account (Hutchison, 2019). The theory successfully connects with the case due to the influence that gender is imposing on the health of Marie's partner, and that Irene's family is angry at Marie because of the nature of her relationship with her. In the case of Pete Mullin, the social disengagement theory fits his situation well as it addresses the gradual decrease in social interactions among the elderly. I associated Pete Mullin’s case with the theory due to his decision to cut ties with one of his daughters since his divorce. In addition, he likes tending his orchids on the back porch, which is associated with the theory’s icon of an older man who rocks the chair on the front porch (Kjeldgaard-Christiansen, 2020). The fact that he is estranged from his daughter connects the case with the theory as it implies a gradual reduction of interactions with his family. The activity theory of gerontology fits Margaret Davis's case best due to its ability to address work involvement among the elderly. I associated Margaret Davis with the approach because she engages in baking together with her daughter Judy. Although she forgets her treatment, she sometimes remembers to give herself the insulin shots. Notably, the activity theory argues that high levels of activities in older people are directly related to higher levels of life satisfaction (Li & Qian, 2017). Besides, the elderly can keep themselves away from forgetfulness
3 by engaging in physical activities. The theory successfully connects with my case study due to Mrs. Davis’s willingness to administer medication to herself when no one is around to help and taking part in other activities such as cooking.
