1 5-2 PROJECT ONE: RESEARCH INVESTIGATION Kaylea Kirkland June 6, 2024 Brittany Smith, M.S.
2 I. Introduction : In this section, you will discuss your social science issue and select resources that you can use to research the problem. Specifically, you should do the following: A. Elaborate on the unique aspects of the social science issue you have chosen to investigate. What sets it apart and makes it significant? B. Detail at least three social science resources that you could use to investigate the issue you selected. How do these sources meet the academic standards for your topic? In your description, consider questions such as these: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your issue? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices? I have chosen fashion for self-expression as my topic. This is significant because fashion, in its many forms, allows us to be unique and find new ways to make ourselves stand out from the rest of the population. Fashion reflects a person's beliefs, values, tastes, and cultural background, making everyone’s style a unique expression of themselves. I have used three highly credible and relevant social science resources to help me investigate: "Fashion Psychology: Understanding the Impact of Clothing on Mental Well-Being," "The Sociological Influence on Fashion," and "Fashion Anthropology: Exploring Culture through Style Analysis." These resources discuss the topic of fashion for self-expression and how it is beneficial from a psychological, sociological, and anthropological perspective. It is essential to know that fashion can significantly impact mental health beyond how it affects anthropologists today. My thought process through my research on the fashion of self-expression has opened more questions and ways I can find answers from different cultures, religions, backgrounds, and more.
3 Body : In this section, you will use the selected social science resources to investigate your issue, focusing on an appropriate audience and the social science principles related to the problem. Be sure to cite your sources. Based on your research, address the following: A. Identify  the social science  principles  that apply to your issue. In other words, which principles of social science apply to the topic you selected? B. Explain  how the  principles  you identified apply to your issue. In other words, how are the social science principles you identified relevant to your issue? C. Identify an  audience  that would be interested in your issue. For example, who would benefit most from hearing your message? Who could best help address the topic? D. Describe how and why you can tailor your  message  to your audience, providing specific examples. For example, will your audience understand social scientific terminology and principles, or will you need to explain these? How will you communicate effectively with your audience? Fashion is a form of self-expression that reflects new attitudes and behaviors accepted within social norms and roles. People often dress to align themselves with specific social groups they want to belong to. Fashion as a means of self-expression gives insight into an individual's values and beliefs, as their choice of clothing reflects their identity and personality. Understanding the relationship between fashion, social norms, and roles is crucial in identifying the target audience. It's essential to understand the fashion and the individuals wearing it, how it represents them, and what makes them unique. To assess the audience's understanding of fashion for self-expression, it's essential to ensure that their needs are met, as everyone deserves to understand the impact of their clothing choices on themselves and others, both in the past,

4 present, and potentially in the future. Fashion for self-expression is not limited to a specific audience. Still, it is relevant to those who use clothing to make a personal fashion statement in our judgmental and critical society. It's interesting to explore the historical perspective of fashion for self-expression, including when fashion started and when it began to trend in other cultures, beliefs, and personalities. For example, women in India wear an Anarkali, a dress often worn during dance performances. Different cultures, religions, personalities, and backgrounds have different meanings of fashion for self-expression. Conclusion : In this section, you will conclude your research investigation by discussing future directions for research. Specifically, you should do the following: A. Based on your investigation, develop a  research question  related to the issue you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about? B. Explain how a  social scientist  would investigate the research question you developed. In other words, what would the following steps be if a social scientist were to continue researching your question? How can we tell if our confidence improves our self-esteem in expressing ourselves through fashion? I'm interested in delving into the history of fashion and its impact on self-expression, as it helps us comprehend ourselves and others. Acknowledging that our attire reflects who we are and affects our behavior and expectations in different situations is crucial. Further research by social scientists could involve identifying the period during which the clothing was made, the materials used, the cost, and the manufacturing process. Social scientists would also need to consider the influence of religion, cultural norms, and demographics to gain a comprehensive understanding.
