Final Paper Preparatory Assignment This assignment will help you prepare for your final paper and will be completed over the first three weeks of the course. Specifically, this assignment will assist you in researching and analyzing scholarly sources, creating an annotated bibliography, and crafting a preliminary thesis for your week 5 paper. The suggested timeframe for completion for each of the components of this assignment are included below. Much of this work is targeted for completion in Week 3, though you can always work ahead. This assignment is due to your instructor, submitted through Waypoint, by the end of Week 3. After your instructor has graded this assignment, please be sure to use it and the feedback provided to you by your instructor as you construct your final paper. As a reminder, you can also access your feedback through Waypoint directly. 1. Identification of Social Problem & Social Science Disciplines (Week 1): In your week 1 discussion, you selected a social problem to examine for your final paper. Please discuss this social problem and why you selected this topic below. In addition, discuss the two social science disciplines you selected to examine this social problem and why, Which social problem have you chosen to investigate? Why? The social issue I chose to discuss is gender inequality. I chose this topic because as a woman that grew up in a household where the women and men had strict “gender appropriate” roles and then serving in the military where men and women were treated very differently it is a topic that means a lot to myself. I struggled some days in the military because I wanted to be like the guys, I wanted to be taken seriously when I talked to a mechanic about what I knew was wrong with my tractors. But because I was a woman I was talked down to, I didn’t get yelled at or treated like the males because they thought I couldn’t handle it since I am a woman. Or the males were required to suck it up and “be a man” they weren’t allowed to have feelings about things, but I was expected to cry and have every feeling. Studying this topic will give me a better education on the inequality of genders and help me to better understand the effects our society and home life have on how we treat each other. Which social science disciplines did you select to aid you in your examination of this social problem? Why? The disciplines I chose are sociology and psychology because these disciplines will help me research the root causes of gender inequality since they are the studies of society and our individual experiences that have shaped who people are today.
2. Identifying & Evaluating Sources (Weeks 2 and 3) Research is heavily dependent upon the identification and evaluation of sources, which is a necessary step prior to the writing process. During weeks 2 and 3 of this course, you will be responsible for identifying and evaluating two scholarly sources from each social science discipline that you have selected. At least one of these sources should be identified and described by the end of week 2, as discussing this source will be an important part of your Week 2 Research Checkpoint. Remember, scholarly sources are published in scholarly journals, or if books, scholarly presses. The library has a great tutorial on what a scholarly source is and how it is different from a popular source. You may also find the How to Read a Scholarly Article and Evaluating Sources tutorials helpful for this portion of your assignment. In the space provided below, you will provide APA-formatted references and annotations for each source you will be using. An annotation is an examination of your source that: Explains what the source is What this source can tell us about your social problem What research methods were used within the study How this source will help you prove your thesis. Please make sure to be specific, as reflecting upon your sources will help you with your analysis later. Your annotations should be 1-2 paragraphs in length. Here are some examples of annotations . First Social Science Discipline: APA Citation for Source 1: Provide the APA citation for your source. Here are some examples of APA citations. Libretexts. (2021, January 8). 11.3: Sociological Perspectives on gender stratification. Social Sci LibreTexts. https://socialsci.libretexts.org/Courses/Solano_Community_College/ SOC_002%3A_Social_Issues_and_Problems/ 11%3A_Gender_Stratification_and_Inequality/ 11.03%3A_Sociological_Perspectives_on_Gender_Stratification
Annotation for Source 1: This source gives and abundance of information regarding the different perspectives of gender inequality in society but one I would like to focus on is the conflict perspective. The conflict perspective is that one gender belittles the other to show and keep power over the other. This perspective explains how the genders are fighting for dominance, and in our society it is men seeking dominance over women and trying to make women the subordinate group (Libretexts 2021).The research method that I see in this source is qualitative research because it looks more at examples in society or experiences such as pictures of a post card from the Victorian era, and a photo of a woman in India doing construction. Also adding in information about the Women’s Suffrage Movement and how the struggle for power has lead to these events in our history. This source will help my paper because it explains the type of society that we live in, a world in which we are always struggling for that dominant status and the measures women have to take to be able to achieve just a bit more of equality among men.

APA Citation for Source 2: Saguy, A. C., & Rees, M. E. (2021, April 22). Gender, power, and harassment: Sociology in the #MeToo ERA - annual reviews. Annual Review of Sociology. https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/pdf/10.1146/annurev-soc-090320-031147 Annotation for Source 2: This source gives an understanding of what the #MeToo movement was and why it became a headlining movement. The movement began in 2017 when three dozen women came forward to talk about the sexual harassment and assault by a well-known Hollywood producer. This movement brought a lot of attention to the issue with workplace sexual harassment and assault. This source discussed how sexual harassment came to be penalized by the law, the history of how it did not exist legally until 1975. How women just accepted the fact that it was a price they had to pay to work with men (Saguy, A. and Rees, M. 2021). Sexual harassment is something that is hard to get accurate data due to it being not reported in most cases. Sometimes women don’t feel comfortable reporting due to thinking they will have repercussions in the workplace or they are just embarrassed. The research method that I saw in this source was more qualitative because it discusses more of the experiences and actions have been taken to avoid the harassment and mistreatment in the workplace. This can help with my paper because it will give more detail into why gender inequality is such a big social issue and how it is effecting our society. Second Social Science Discipline: APA Citation for Source 1: Dorius, S. F., & Firebaugh, G. (2010). Trends in Global Gender Inequality. Social Forces, 88(5), 1941–1968. http://www.jstor.org/stable/40927534 Annotation for Source 1: In this article the author discusses gender inequality on a global scale and the growing trends of lowering the gap between men and women. The research that is used in this source compares the data from country and global. Movements and conventions and other events have shown the roaring goal of each country wanting to fix the gap between men and woman and working towards more equality for both genders. Although each countries take is different than the next the data is showing that the steps taken are in the right direction. The research method that is being demonstrated in this source is quantitative research due to the fact that the source has multiple points of data examples, charts, and statistics comparing different years and how much the steps being taken are working to help this social issue.
APA Citation for Source 2: Nicolson, P. (2015). Gender, power and organization. Google Books. https://books.google.com/books? id=z0isCQAAQBAJ&lpg=PP1&ots=0SyFtXwZ7c&dq=gender+inequality+psychological+ perspectives+me+too+movement&lr&pg=PR3#v=onepage&q=gender%20inequality %20psychological%20perspectives%20me%20too%20movement&f=false Annotation for Source 2: This book has brought a lot of attention to more of the experiences of women in the work place, giving examples of things men say compared to what women have save said when interviewed. Addressing also the fact that “we are still some distance from gender equality at work and at home” (Nicolson, 2015). This is because patriarchal power has changed to resist the changes that are made to help these gaps, no matter what is being portrayed. (Nicolson, 2015) This book gives an abundance of information about how much our society will not change to fix this issue because it has been imbedded in the minds and social norms of each and every one of us. This book is crucial to my research because it gives information and examples of why this is a social issue and how it will not change, this will be an issue that is always faced due to the social norms that have been taught for generations and not changing any time soon. 3. Discipline Specific Reflection (Week 3) Next, you will need to reflect upon how each discipline examined the social problem collectively. In a paragraph for each discipline, make connections between the two sources for each discipline. How do the approaches within these sources exemplify the approaches of the discipline itself? Based upon these sources, how does that discipline lend itself to the study of your social problem For example, if you chose Anthropology and History, discuss how the anthropological sources examined the topic from an anthropological point of view, and how, based upon these sources, how anthropology lends itself to the study of the social problem. Then do the same from a historical perspective.
Select your first discipline In my first source it discussed the different perspectives of gender inequality throughout society. Focusing on one the most was the conflict perspective in which the reason we have gender inequality is due to one gender trying to dominate the other and making them submissive, which in this social issue it is men dominating women. Which connects us to the second source which is about the #MeToo movement and how it came to be. Sexual harassment is the perfect example of how men try to dominate women in society because in most cases women are embarrassed or scared to report such horrible things. Which leads to the man gaining control over the women and showing his dominance. This especially happens in the workplace because women are scared of the repercussions of their actions, some men will even tell the women that if they report they will lose their job. Select your second discipline The two sources that I have read for the psychology discipline go together because they have two different sides of the story. One article discusses the statistics and the global efforts to change the gap between the genders and how the steps being taken are starting to succeed. Showing the data from not only just a country scale but globally. The second article gives in detail descriptions of what is going on in the workplace and the things being said. But also explaining that due to our history as a society the gender inequality issue will not change no matter the efforts being taken to do so. Since we have been essentially trained from the very beginning of time to assume specific roles due to our gender, things will not change. Things may appear to change from the outside but will not change altogether. 4. Introduction and Thesis Statement (Week 3) Develop a draft of your introduction and thesis statement for your final paper. An introduction introduces your topic and approach. A thesis is a sentence length statement of the main idea of your paper. A good introduction and thesis should be informed by the findings of your sources, and your analysis of the ways in which those findings apply to the final paper prompt. For more information about thesis statements, consult the UAGC Writing Center’s Thesis Statement Tutorial and UAGC AEC How To Write a Thesis video .

Draft of Introduction and thesis: Throughout society we face many issues, some we face alone, some we face together as a community, and some we face together from a global standpoint. One issue that has been sweeping the globe is gender inequality. Gender inequality has become an issue that in most cases has turned violent. Throughout history women used to except the mistreatment because they just assumed that they had to if they were going to be a part of the workforce or be in a male dominant trade. But today women are no longer just taking the beatings, sexual harassment, and belittling words and work that has been forced upon them for centuries.
