Be sure to com- plete each Response section. When referencing scripture or other materials, only include a brief or abbreviated sum- mary along with the citation as these cannot be included in the required word count. When you have completed the document, save it to your computer and follow the instructions in your course to submit the assignment to your in- structor. 1. Response: This week we have been studying article of faith number 9, “We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does not reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.” From the First Vision to the present day, ongoing revelation is clearly a key feature of the Restoration. Divine guidance comes to the Church through living prophets and apostles who hold the same keys and authority as prophets held in ancient times. Jacob 4:8 says, "Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord. How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find out all his ways. And no man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God." Our mortal minds can't even begin to comprehend God's power and his formation of the universe, what we do know are the bits he has revealed to us. It hurts my mind to even try to think about all the vastness of God's plan and love for us. 2 Nephi 28:30 says, "For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have." When we receive revelation from God it comes line by line, little bits and pieces that are easy for our small minds to understand. So we need to carve out time in our days to be mindfully looking for ways God has spoken to us. 1 Corinthians 2:10 says, "But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searchth all things, yea, the deep things of God." God uses the holy spirit to speak to us. Word Count:
4. Synthesis: Per- sonal Relevance and Application to the Real World There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and con- cern for them again. Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own: abortion abuse/bullying addiction depression divorce domestic violence energy/environmental issues violence gambling genocide homosexuality international terrorism materialism natural disasters pornography unemployment poverty racial strife/hatred religious intolerance/persecution threats to religious liberty same-sex marriage suicide Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know. Write a response in at least 300-450 words and list your word count at the end of your re- sponse.

5. Issue: racial strife Some of the key points we have learned this week were that: The things of God are known only by revela- tion, Revelation is communication from God to His children, Living prophets are guided by revelation and thus can lead us to truth, God reveals truth in a variety of ways, We must be worthy in order to receive reve- lation by trusting in God rather than in the wisdom of man, and If we will diligently seek the mysteries of God will be unfolded to us. One of the most controversial revelations received was that African American/ Blacks couldn’t hold the priesthood until the 70’s. This is a situation that is less a revelation from god more a practice of the time, the church was established in 1830, during an era of great racial division in the United States. At the time, many people of African descent lived in slavery, and racial distinctions and prejudice were not just common but customary among white Americans. Some members at that time believed that God’s “curse” on Cain was the mark of a dark skin. Black servitude was sometimes viewed as a second curse placed upon Noah’s grandson Canaan as a result of Ham’s indiscretion toward his father. By the late 1940s and 1950s, racial integration was becoming more common in American life. At this time, given the long his- tory of withholding the priesthood from men of black African descent, Church leaders believed that a revela- tion from God was needed to alter the policy, and they made ongoing efforts to understand what should be done. In June 1978, after “spending many hours in the Upper Room of the Salt Lake Temple supplicating the Lord for divine guidance,” Church President Spencer W. Kimball, “He has heard our prayers, and by revela- tion has confirmed that the long-promised day has come,” the First Presidency announced on June 8. The First Presidency stated that they were “aware of the promises made by the prophets and presidents of the Church who have preceded us” that “all of our brethren who are worthy may receive the priesthood.” 21 The revelation rescinded the restriction on priesthood ordination. In conclusion the original withhold of the priest- hood was NOT revelation from god, but rather a social norm. We have a loving Heavenly Father who loves each of his children equally and wouldn’t withhold blessings based on the color of ones skin. It however was revelation from god to the prophets to allow black to hold the priesthood and enter the temple because god knew we were at a time in history where allowing this was safe.
