Reflection and Synthesis Report Name: Emily Palmer Week #: Week 5 Instructions In the table provided below, you will complete your reflection and synthesis responses for this week. Be sure to com- plete each Response section. When referencing scripture or other materials, only include a brief or abbreviated sum- mary along with the citation as these cannot be included in the required word count. When you have completed the document, save it to your computer and follow the instructions in your course to submit the assignment to your in- structor. 1. Did you complete all the assigned reading for the week? [Yes or No ⃝] 2. Article of Faith Please identify the Article of Faith studied this week Response: We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.” 3. Explanation of Key Events and Scriptures Demonstrate your comprehension of fundamental truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and your ability to use the scriptures to teach them. Include at least three scripture ref- erences to support the truths you teach (you may reference them, but there is no need to quote them). Share your testimony as you would when teaching someone. Your response will be evaluated by the following criteria: 1. 200–300 words in length (please include your word count at the bottom of the sec- tion). 2. Include at least 3 scripture references .
This week we are studying the article of faith number 4, “We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.”A principle is a truth that leads us back to Heavenly Father vs an ordinance which is an act that someone with the priesthood performs. These four principles and ordinances are the first we must live before we can grow in the gospel. D&C 20 verse 71 says "No one can be received into the church of Christ unless he has arrived unto the years of ac- countability before God, and is capable of repentance." This refers to baptism. The age of accountability the verse is talking about is 8 years old. I think this verse is cool because it shows baptism as being more than a one-time occurrence. baptism gives the ability to repent over and over. D&C 131 verse 2 says, "And in order to obtain the highest, a man must enter into this order of the priest- hood [meaning the new and everlasting covenant of marriage];" Men have to obtain the priesthood and women must marry to get into the highest kingdom. D&C 137 verse 10 says, "And I also beheld that all chil- dren who die before they arrive at the years of accountability are saved in the celestial kingdom of heaven." Though we understand ordinances are necessary to enter the highest kingdom of heaven, god is merciful and doesn't hold children who aren't old enough and have died accountable. Word Count:
4. Synthesis: Per- sonal Relevance and Application to the Real World There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and con- cern for them again. Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own: abortion abuse/bullying addiction depression divorce domestic violence energy/environmental issues violence gambling genocide homosexuality international terrorism materialism natural disasters pornography unemployment poverty racial strife/hatred religious intolerance/persecution threats to religious liberty same-sex marriage suicide Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know. Write a response in at least 300-450 words and list your word count at the end of your re- sponse.

5. The world problem/issue I chose this week is: depression Breakdown the fourth article of faith, “Faith is hope for things that we cannot see but are true. We believe that Jesus Christ is our Savior, and we trust Him to help and guide us. Repentance is when we change our hearts to be more like Heavenly Father. When we do something wrong, we feel sorry and promise ourselves and Heavenly Father that we will not do that wrong thing again. When we repent we can be forgiven because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Baptism is the first step in becoming a member of Jesus Christ’s Church. We can be baptized when we are eight years old. At age eight, we are old enough to know the difference be- tween right and wrong. The gift of the Holy Ghost is given to us by a priesthood holder after we are baptized. The Holy Ghost prompts us to choose the right, comforts us, and helps us understand eternal truths. The Holy Ghost is like a still, small voice that we feel in our minds and hearts.” If you focus on the last part about the holy ghost it can bring you a lot of peace knowing you have this comforting gift. When I get depressed I can feel safe knowing I have the holy ghost as a guide. Word Count:
