Response: This week we are studying the 8th Article of Faith which states, We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. As we come to understand the history of word of god, and experience the power the scriptures can have in our personal life, we will be more likely to use them as a guide throughout our mortal journey back to Heavenly Father.1   Nephi 13:23 says, "The book that thou beholdest is a record of the cJews, which contains the covenants of the Lord, which he hath made unto the house of Israel; and it also containeth many of the prophecies of the holy prophets; and it is a record like unto the engravings which are upon the plates of brass, save there are not so many; nevertheless, they contain the covenants of the Lord, which he hath made unto the house of Israel; wherefore, they are of great worth unto the Gentiles." Here the lord is telling Nephi about the Bible and what's it's about. Its important we see the use of the Bible as well as the Book of Mormon. D&C 35:20 says, "And a commandment I give unto thee—that thou shalt write for him; and the scriptures shall be given, even as they are in mine own bosom, to the salvation of mine own elect;   For they will hear my voice, and shall see me, and shall not be asleep, and shall abide the day of my coming; for they shall be puri- fied, even as I am pure." The scriptures are a gift and a tool we can use to come to know god. As we read of him, we will hear his voice in the scripture and come to know and understand him. The best way to find god is in his scripture. 2 Nephi 3:12 says, "Wherefore, the fruit of thy loins shall write; and the fruit of the loins of Judah shall write; and that which shall be written by the fruit of thy loins, and also that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah, shall grow together, unto the confounding of false doctrines and laying down of contentions, and establishing peace among the fruit of thy loins, and bringing them to the knowledge of their fathers in the latter days, and also to the knowledge of my covenants, saith the Lord." The Bible and the Book of Mormon 'shall grow together, unto the confounding of false doctrines and laying down of con- tentions, and establishing peace'. Both the Bible and Book of Mormon are true and hold essential truth about gods gospel. We need one to understand the other. Word Count:
4. Synthesis: Per- sonal Relevance and Application to the Real World There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and con- cern for them again. Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own: abortion abuse/bullying addiction depression divorce domestic violence energy/environmental issues violence gambling genocide homosexuality international terrorism materialism natural disasters pornography unemployment poverty racial strife/hatred religious intolerance/persecution threats to religious liberty same-sex marriage suicide Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know. Write a response in at least 300-450 words and list your word count at the end of your re- sponse.

5. The world problem/issue I chose this week is: religious intolerance/persecution Response:  The church has been persecuted since the beginning for the adding the book of mormon as a religious text. I think elder holland says it best, “Continuing revelation does not demean or discredit existing revelation. The Old Testament does not lose its value in our eyes when we are introduced to the New Testament, and the New Testament is only enhanced when we read the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. In considering the additional scripture accepted by Latter-day Saints, we might ask: Were those early Christians who for decades had access only to the primitive Gospel of Mark (generally considered the first of the New Testament Gospels to be written)—were they offended to receive the more detailed accounts set forth later by Matthew and Luke, to say nothing of the unprecedented passages and revelatory emphasis offered later yet by John? Surely they must have rejoiced that ever more convincing evidence of the divinity of Christ kept coming. And so do we rejoice.” By adding the book of mormon we arnt discrediting the Bible, in fact we should be rejoicing that were getting more information. This doctrine lies at the very heart of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and of our message to the world. The book of mormon sometimes gets dis- credited because of physical instruments used in the translation process, but such aids to facilitate the com- munication of God’s power and inspiration are consistent with accounts in scripture. In addition to the Urim and Thummim, the Bible mentions other physical instruments used to access God’s power: the rod of Aaron, a brass serpent, holy anointing oils, the Ark of the Covenant, and even dirt from the ground mixed with saliva to heal the eyes of a blind man. So you can’t beileve the Bible and not also believe in same god of the Book Of Mormon. Word Count:
