How does this creed avoid the trinitarian heresies? 5. What does “persons” mean and what does it not mean, when referring to the Trinity? 6. How does the doctrine of the Trinity help us to understand the meaning of “God is love” (1 John 4:8)? 7. Based on the section “How Not to Talk About the Trinity” (pg. 70), what are some words we should avoid when we are explaining the Trinity and why should we avoid them? Scripture Reading and Reflection Questions: Read the passages of Scripture and respond to each question with a few sentences. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 8. This passage is called the Shema , which means “listen” in Hebrew. In the Jewish tradition, it is a central commandment. What does the Shema tell you about who God is? 9. What does it look like to the follow this command today? Matthew 3:13-17 and Mark 1:9-11 10. How is each person of the Trinity represented in these passages? What do these passages tell you about the relationship between the persons of the Trinity? 11. In what way does this passage contradict the heresy of modalism? John 14:1-31 12. What does this passage tell you about the relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Work through the chapter slowly, making notes and observations as you go. John 17 13. Especially focus on presenting a clear, concise, and well-supported explanation of the doctrine of the Trinity.
