Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A.
This passage of Acts is ultimately a story of redemption, but the Fall is also very evident within this story. The Fall, which ushered in sin and its effects upon us is detailed in this passage through physical sickness, demonic possession, and the practice of magic. Yet, amid these deplorable conditions, God “worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul” (Acts 19: 11, NKJV). This is the redemptive work of God being demonstrated within the lives of the affected. Too often, redemption is seen as only the forgiveness of our sins, but, redemption is also deliverance and freedom from the clutches of sin. This freedom is seen in the deliverance of the demon-possessed man, the burning of books from those who practiced magic, and the subsequent loss of that value. Through this the name of Jesus was magnified.
B.
God is omnipotent. His power, expressed through the miracles recorded in this passage, demonstrates His authority over evil, sickness, and disease. This demonstration leads to repentance and salvation in Jesus Christ. This theological principle harmonizes with the rest of Scripture. Mark chapter one records a story where Jesus delivered a man in the synagogue who was possessed with an unclean spirit. This is a clear demonstration of superiority between God and the prince of darkness. Also, Mark 16: 20 states – “And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through accompanying signs” (NKJV). Thus we see from this verse, that the disciples ministered in the same capacity of Jesus Christ. In addition, immediately after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the 120 in the upper room, Peter preached and 3,000 souls were saved. This story indicates that the true purpose behind preaching and accompanying signs is the salvation of people.
C.
This passage in Acts reflects the person and ministry of Jesus Christ by demonstrating His superiority over the works of darkness. As Jesus ministered on this earth, He battled spiritual darkness and suppressed it as recorded in John 1: 4-5 – “In Him was life, and the
life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (NKJV). As Jesus stated in Matthew 12: 28 – “But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.” The residents of Ephesus were witnessing the arrival of God’s kingdom and power right before their eyes. Yet, more so than just a superiority display; this passage reflects the heart of God by redeeming people. 2 Peter 3: 9 – “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that
all should come to repentance” (NKJV). Page 1 of 1
