Name__ Ashlee Parker________ Unit Four Primary Source Reading Worksheet REL 101: Introduction to Religion 1. What do the primary source readings express about Islamic conceptions of God? Muslims believe God is the creator of all things, he is the all-powerful and all-knowing. When he revealed the Qur’an to Muhammad, they saw it as the ultimate gift to humanity. They believe that God wanted to clarify all the major theological issues once and for all. One thing that I think is interesting is that there are so many names used in Islam to describe God that are all based off different attributes. 2. What do the primary source readings express about Islamic conceptions of the Prophets and the message of Jesus? Islam is the religion of Abraham, Isaac, Moses, and Jesus. All of the prophets had the same message, God is merciful and we are called to repent. In one of the Islam readings, an idea is suggested that says that one of Jesus’ followers went in his place on the cross. This would mean that Jesus did not actually die on the cross, but his mission of teaching the message of repentance and need for obedience was not a failure. 3. What do the primary source readings express about key Islamic institutions and rituals? The primary source readings state that the five pillars are extremely important when it comes to the Islamic faith. The five pillars include the profession of faith, prayer, alms, fasting and pilgrimage. All Muslims should pray at least five times a day at specific times and undergo the ritual washing before prayer in order to show respect. Muslims believe that the obligation to follow these rituals allows God to remain a top priority in their lives. During the month of Ramadan, there is complete fasting during the daylight hours in order to remember and celebrate when the Qur’an was sent down. Throughout all of the Islamic rituals, it is obvious how serious it is taken and that much of it is done with respect to God. 4. In what ways is Islam similar to and different from the other Abrahamic faiths studied in this course? As the primary sources states, “The Jews were given some of the truth, but some of the details were distorted; the Christians were given the prophet Jesus, but they turned the prophet into a God.” Many of the descriptions used to describe God are the same among all the faiths. While all of these religions include similar prophets and basic ideals, there are key differences about how it has all been interpreted that have lead to the different religions. For example, in Christianity and Judaism, there is not a month long of fasting.
