LEARNING ACTIVITY- CHARACTER SKETCH Session 2: Learning Activity - Character Sketch Miracle Cox Colorado Christian University BIB-110A-35001-SU23 - Introduction to the Bible Kelly Nichols 08/06/2023
LEARNING ACTIVITY- CHARACTER SKETCH How does Scripture describe this person? According to the Bible that bears his name, Joshua was personally appointed successor to Moses Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: “I am now a hundred and twenty years old and I am no longer able to lead you. The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’ The Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the Lord said. The Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land. The Lord will deliver them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:1-8; NIV) and led Israel in the conquest of Canaan after the Exodus from Egypt. He was a charismatic warrior.
LEARNING ACTIVITY- CHARACTER SKETCH What can we glean about their character from the text ? This is mentioned many times throughout the book of Joshua. Therefore, fear the Lord and serve him with all your heart. Forget forever the idols that your ancestors worshiped when they lived on the other side of the Euphrates and in Egypt. Joshua is shown as the leader, and we see that is depicted as one of the greatest generals in Israeli history. He is a man of strong faith in the Lord, faithful and obedient. This is mentioned many times throughout the book of Joshua. Therefore, fear the Lord and serve him with all your heart. Why do you think their story is included in Scripture? There are many stories in the Bible, each with a reason for being there, and behind each story told is a lesson and guidance from the Lord. The Bible is a great guide for learning how to learn from God's Word, follow God's Word, and follow God's guidance. Joshua shows obedience to God, faithfulness to promises, and susceptibility to sin. God has a purpose for everyone and uses each of us differently. just as he used Joshua as a key to tell the story of God. What do you think we're supposed to learn from their story? God spoke the same words to Joshua twice at different times. The etymology of courage literally means "to deal with the blood of the heart". God sees our fear and says, I called your name, you are mine. Joshua presents the Lord as their general, who will lead the people to a victorious battle if they trust and obey. So basically, what we are supposed to learn in Joshua if we trust in God and obey him and his word, we will reap rewards from God.

LEARNING ACTIVITY- CHARACTER SKETCH How do you see God using them in His grand story of the redemption of Israel? Throughout Israel's history, God used Joshua in many ways. God first used him as a leader and messenger to lead the Israelites to the promised land according to God's law. In Joshua 1:1-3 says, "After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua’s son of Nun, Moses' aide: "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses" (NIV). His verse indicates that God gave Joshua the responsibility of leading the Israelites to the Promised Land in and as leader of following God's law. God also used Joshua as an example to send a message of obedience and faith. Joshua was a perfect example of following God’s, laws and letting God guide his life. In conclusion, after exploring into the story of Joshua, I realized just how important he is in the Bible. Joshua was more than just a military commander; he was a faithful man who kept and obeyed God's law in all circumstances. As a Christian, sometimes when things are going well in my life, I forget about God. God keeps his promises to me, so I should devote myself more to Him every day. God used Joshua as an example to teach us about obedience, faith and leadership.
