From our textbook reading of chapter 13, four reasons describe how Christianity championed competing faiths and persecution in Ancient Rome. The first reason that Rawls (2018) explains is its simplicity of allegiance and commitment, which gave permanent and consistent values to follow (p. 235). A second reason is that Christianity welcomed all followers of the Gospel regardless of your social status in Roman society. This was huge, especially for a culture that was built around the component of social classes. Next, was that “Christianity held out a hope for a better life in the world of the heavenly city” (Rawls, 2018, p. 235). Some cults did offer a similar idea of immortality; however, believers in Christ will spend everlasting life in the presence of God (Rawls, 2018, p. 235). The Final reason is what I consider contributed the most impact upon Roman culture, as it embodies the second Great Commandment of ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself, which offered people of Roman society a satisfaction of belonging (Rawls, 2018, p. 235). It also inspired the feel of security as the wisdom of unity offered stability among the anxious masses of Roman society, which in the turn of the third century presented the beginning of the wavering empire. Also, the witness of Christians who were prosecuted for their
faith only strengthened this bond, “as the church assumed the responsibility of caring for its own in a hostile environment” (Rawls, 2018, p. 235). This established a passionate community that motivated other believers, who invited their friends and family. Reference: Rawls, D. (2018). A Narrative of Western Culture

Caleb, You did a great job with your discussion post. I also made the similar assessment that the sense of belonging had provided the greatest impact upon Roman culture. As you pointed, this was a huge impact upon the lowest social class of Roman Society, which were mostly slaves or freedmen. The clear disparity equality versus the open arms of Chrisitianity was an enormous message. However, our textbook does indicate Christianity inspired wisdom and unity throughout the empire regardless of social rank. In the turn of the third century, the wavering empire presented significant anxiety among the people of Rome. Christianities message of joy, love, and salvation was a welcoming change that offered stability. Likewise, the church proved to withstand the hostile environment. This ultimately established a passionate shift and motivated more people to follow. Marco, I enjoyed reading your discussion post. You did an excellent job with describing the four causes that helped Christianity persevere and succeed in Ancient Rome. I did not choose Rawls third reason to cause the most impact upon Roman culture. However, your assessment delivered interesting aspects to consider. The Roman Empire was starting to exhibit dramatic changes that brought fear and uncertainty. The Christian church offered a stable community, as well as a
message that provided comfort in life, and after death. I think this was also a welcoming change
for the people of Rome and contributed an immense sense of belonging. The message of hope and salvation proved to be an incredible message that Ancient Rome desired and motivated the
shift toward Christianity.
