Response: Response: The first scripture that helped me to better understand this article of faith this week was 1 Nephi 13:20-41.
This scripture very clearly teaches us that many plain truths were removed from the Bible which is what makes the
Book of Mormon so significant. The Book of Mormon expounds on those truths that were lost and also restores thosethat were taken out. This is why it is very important that we use the Book of Mormon and the Bible together so that we can learn all of these very important doctrines. The next scripture that helped me to understand this article of faith was 2 Nephi 29. This chapter warns us of a mindset that we see a lot today where people think that there is no other scripture other than the Bible. It reminds us that God loves all His people and visited the people in the
Americas at this time too. The last scripture that stuck out to me was D&C 42:12. This verse stuck out to me because
it reminds us that we are so blessed to have this knowledge of the Book of Mormon and the Bible and we can’t keep
that to ourselves. It’s our responsibility to go out and share these holy books with others.
Word Count: 222 4. Synthesis: Personal Relevance and Application to the Real World
There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences
of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and concern for them again.
Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own:
abortion
abuse/bullying
addiction
depression
divorce
domestic violence
energy/environmental issues
violence
gambling
genocide
homosexuality
international terrorism
materialism
natural disasters
pornography
unemployment
poverty
racial strife/hatred
religious intolerance/persecution
threats to religious liberty
same-sex marriage
suicide
Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about
the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know.
Write a response in at least 300-450 words
and list your word count at the end of your response.
5.
The world problem/issue I chose this week is:
Addiction
Response: Response: I chose this topic for this week because it is something that we all have to deal with in our lives. Everyone in this world to some extent has to deal with an addiction of some sort that will negatively affect them. This is a way Satan gets us to go down the wrong path and make bad choices in our lives. Addiction can be minor sometimes or it can be very major. I know of people who have had very big issues with addiction that have had
a great negative impact on their lives. On my mission I worked with a lot of people who battled with different addictions and one thing that I felt was important to teach them was that God wants us to do what’s right, so He will help us to do what’s right. An article of faith that I feel can really help with this problem is article of faith 4. This article of faith teaches us
of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the blessings of it. We learn from this that faith and repentance are very important
in the gospel and will help us in all aspects of our lives. I think that if someone truly does want to overcome an
addiction and they have faith, then they can receive the help they need from God in order to do so. After they have
that faith and make those changes, they are able to repent and be completely forgiven of their sins. This is so
important for everyone to know because it brings comfort to us and allows us to know that we are not alone. Jesus
Christ suffered so that we don’t have to. If we apply the atonement in our lives we are able to overcome these
shortcomings and have peace to our souls.
