BIBL110: New Testament Survey
25 September 2023
For the New Testament Bible Study Assignment, I will be using MLA formatting style, and my
chosen passage is John 14:1-12.
Within the gospel of John readers can discover the story of Jesus told like never before.
They find a caring, humble, and kind Jesus who heals unapologetically and dives into a deep
intimacy with those who desire to know Him more. One example of this is found within the
dialogue of John 14:1-12. In this passage, Jesus is encouraging His disciples, telling them of the
place He has prepared for them. Thomas, one of the disciples, asks Jesus various questions on
this matter, such as “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
(John 14:5), and then “Can you show us the father?” (v. 8). Probing into the heart of Philip, Jesus
gently asks, “Don’t you know me, Philip?” (v. 9). This is a very bold statement, as Jesus is not
only challenging Philip, but he is also identifying himself with God. Within Jewish culture, there
was an emphasis on reaching the Father (Rigdon), so while simultaneously telling the disciples
who He is, He is also asking an important question that can apply to all who read it- Do you
really know Jesus? According to Steven J. Cole from
bible.org
, “Faith in Christ’s person and
hope in Christ’s promise will comfort a troubled heart. Either His words are true or they’re not.”
Although Philip knew Jesus well and had a spent a lot of time with Him, he struggled to believe
what Jesus claimed could be true. Sometimes, it can be easy for Christians to get wrapped up in
the legalistic side of Christianity- checking off the daily Bible reading, tackling the serve

projects, working in a variety of ministries- while missing the point of it all, an intimate
relationship with Jesus
