Reflective Reading Passage: John 3:1-12
Use this template and the course texts
The Inquisitive Christ
and
Approaching the New
Testament
to record brief notes for each step of the reflective reading process
.
Step One:
Prepare
Use this space to understand the key elements of context to your passage. Consulting and citing
Approaching the New Testament
, please complete the contextual information according to the
information found in the course textbook:
By consulting and citing
Approaching the New Testament,
who is the author of this biblical book
(in 2-3 sentences)?
The book of John does not give any evidence on the Author throughout the
book. The way we can identify who the author is, is by finding internal evidence in the book to
find the author. Through doing this we can assume the author is John.
By consulting and citing
Approaching the New Testament
, when was this biblical book written
(in 1 sentence)?
The Gospel of John has dating back to 90 AD.
By consulting and citing
Approaching the New Testament
, what is the overall theme of the book
(in 2-3 sentences)?
This part of the book of John shows Jesus as a teacher.
One way we can see
this is through the assigned reading for this assignment. John 3:1-12 starts off with Jesus meeting
Nicodemus talking about how to be born again, Jesus tells Nicodemus you have to be born again
in the spirit to enter the kingdom of God.
Step Two:
Read
Utilizing
either
a translation of choice
or
creating a paraphrase of your own, use this space to
re-write the full passage of scripture. Please do not copy and paste from an existing translation,
but rather, write out the passage word-by-word in order to slowly reflect on the content.

BIBL 110
A member named Nicodemus met Jesus. He met Jesus at night saying for he is a teacher given
by God. At this point Jesus had been doing things no one could do if God wasn’t with him. Jesus
said to him “You cannot enter heaven without being born again.” Nicodemus wondered how can
one be born again. You cannot reenter a mothers womb. Jesus replied “You have to be reborn
through the spirit, only then you can enter heaven. You shall not be surprised by this.” You are
Israel’s teacher, and do not understand these things said Jesus. We speak about things we know,
and we testify about things we have seen, but you people still don’t accept our testimony. If you
don’t believe of what I speak of about earthly thing how will you believe if I talk about heavenly
things?
Step Three:
Reflect
Use this space to answer the following questions. Consult
The Inquisitive Christ
for insight into
pertinent Gospel texts.
If there is dialogue in the passage, who is speaking (in 1 complete sentence)?
The only people talking in this passage is Nicodemus and Jesus.
What questions are asked in the passage? Please list
all
questions located in the passage.
How can someone be born again?
How would you answer each of the questions asked (in at least 3 sentences)?
No one can enter heaven unless they have accepted Christ in their life. The first thing a person
should do is give their life to Christ. Then you can start learning more things about the religion
and start spreading the Gospel to others.
What words or phrases stand out to you, and why? Are any words/themes repeated? If so, share
why you think there is repetition. Please answer with at least 3 sentences.
The first thing that stood out to me was the phrase you’re Israel’s teacher and don’t understand
these things? This tells me the people who know the most about something still haven’t mastered
it and still have some things to learn. Another thing that stood out was the repetition of the phrase
“You must be born again.” You cannot enter the kingdom of heaven without giving your life to
Christ and being born once again.

What questions do you have as you read this passage? If you have no questions, please explain
why this might be the case.
My question would be to expand on the phrase “You must be born again.” I think I understand it
very well but we are also talking about eternity so I’d like to know as much about it as I can.
Step Four:
Pray
Use this space to formulate a prayer to God, dialoguing with Him about what he may be
speaking to you in this passage:
Lord thank you for providing me this day Lord. I thank you for giving me this assignment where
I can read and think about different scripture verses. Lord I feel like Nicodemus most times
where I don’t know what’s happening and I just want you to help me know that you’re in control
and you’re helping me through everything I do. I also ask that you will help me trust you’re
testimonies Lord. In Jesus name, Amen.
Step Five:
Respond
Use this space to contemplate how God may be asking you to respond to this passage in your life
with him:
By reading this passage I can say that God is calling me to better respond to his and other
people’s testimonies. Sometimes I feel like miracles happen and I don’t give credit to God and
that can push me farther from God. I just need to give God the credit for anything and everything
so I can be closer to him.
