Leadership & Scripture Assessment: Leadership Traits Assignment
To begin this assignment, I will first identify and summarize briefly the six leadership
traits from our Learn material we read about in 1 Samuel regarding King David.
1.)
Vision:
Indication that this is where one needs to go, 2.) Honesty: Being and representing one’s self as a
true person of genuine moral character overall, 3.) Empathy: Caring for those around you and
those who you may work with, 4.) Determination: To be able to achieve results no matter what
struggles, obstacles, or challenges may come your way; also, being able to stick with something
and not give up on it, 5.) Competence: Knowing that one can achieve a desired goal, and finally,
6.) Motivation: Being able to bring others to your vision and have them adopt said vision, too.
In referencing our scriptural readings for this week in 1 Samuel, I feel that the leadership
trait of “determination” was on full display in 1 Samuel: 17:45 where it is stated, “David said to
the Philistine, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in
the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.’” (New
International Version Bible, 1 Samuel: 17:45)
David came into this situation at a full
disadvantage – without much prior fighting or combat experience, being much smaller and
weaker in stature that Goliath, etc.
To be determined means that someone is willing to take on a
task despite the challenges or obstacles that may stand in the way.
Next, I chose to look at 1
Samuel: 24:12-13 where it is stated, “
12
May the Lord judge between you and me. And may
the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you.
13
As the old
saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you.” (New
International Version Bible, 1 Samuel: 24: 12-13)
I think that these verses speak very loudly to
David’s “empathy” that was on full display in this situation.
David was King at the time, and he
could’ve taken this problem into his own hands and ended it for wrongs that had been done to

him, but he was able to step back and see perspective and know that the Lord would ultimately
judge Saul for his wrongdoings.
I chose these Scriptural references because I really felt like they displayed two of the
major six leadership traits and qualities that it takes to be a great, successful, and effective leader
overall.
When I think of where I may potentially wind up as a result of receiving my Doctoral
degree in Education Curriculum and Instruction, I would like to think that the three traits I would
see as most important in my own work would be 1.) Honesty; I choose this because I feel that it
is of the utmost importance to show integrity and honesty behavior when conducting one’s life.
To live any other way is to be in lies and deceit – which are seen as sins in the eyes of the
almighty God.
2.) I would choose determination as my next leadership trait because I feel
strongly that those who are determined will ultimately reach their goals.
With eyes on the Lord,
anything is possible.
That belief goes hand in hand with determination.
Finally, 3.) I would
choose motivation as my third major leadership trait I would like to put into practice going
forward in any potential future leadership position I may hold.
Being motivated means you are
able to bring others along on your journey toward a shared goal.
Giving someone motivation
helps them to accomplish their own objectives and goals.
I feel that this is of the utmost
importance when someone is placed in a leadership position of power.
