Taylor 1 Dillon Taylor Dr. Tommy Spotts THEO 104 20 February 2023 Experience with Theology When hearing the word theology, the main thing that comes to mind is the study of God's word. Also, the science behind the Bible, learning how the Bible ticks, looking at each story and event, and viewing the bigger picture of that specific Scripture or even the Bible as a whole. Oxford Languages defines theology as "the study of the nature of God and religious belief." As well as "religious beliefs and theory when systematically developed." I believe it to be essential to study God's word, not just on the surface, but dive deep into each Scripture. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, it reads, "All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." (ESV), What this means, that studying the Bible is important in our walk of life with Christ, it equips us to and teaches us to be like Christ. I also believe that studying other religions is crucial in studying Christianity to see where the two differ and where that religion contradicts itself, as well as use this information to bring others to Christ. Regarding theology, I have completed BIBL 104, Survey of Old & New Testament, which teaches a foundation of understanding Scripture, how to read biblical literature, the basic principles, the key themes of the Bible, and persons of interest in the Bible. I have also attended group studies at my church on theology, which taught all the major religions and their beliefs. I also enjoy watching The Bible Project on YouTube because it breaks down Scripture and shows
Taylor 2 its meaning. The Bible project was in much of the coursework for BIBL 104, which is how I discovered the channel. Besides BIBL 104, what my church taught, and The Bible Project, I have not learned much on the topic, but I am ready to dive deep into theology and learn and gain all I can in the next eight weeks. A verse I will be using to help me in this course is 2 Timothy 3:15- 17, "and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." (ESV) What I hope to gain from this course is a better understanding of the Bible and better ways to apply it to my life. I know that I will not learn anything about theology in eight weeks or as long as I am walking this Earth, for that matter, but I hope it will give me the basics of theology to learn on my own and expand my knowledge on the subject. I also hope it makes me a better disciple of Christ to bring others to him because how is someone supposed to spread the Gospel and not have an adequate understanding of his word? I also want to become a better God- filled leader and servant in my household and my workplace. Leadership and servantship are crucial to me because Mathew 20:26 talks about to be a leader; you also have to be a servant to the people you are leading and in Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where this no guidance, a people falls, but in abundance of counselors there is safety." (ESV), Which to me means when there are not leaders people fail and fall.
