Western Civ – HW 6 Doc 8.1 Qur’an, Suras 1, 53, 98 1. Based on these excerpts, what beliefs and practices constitute the “right path” of Islam? The excerpts reveal the people are to believe in one God and only that god, “Guide us along the road straight…”(Lualdi 138). 2. How does the Star portray Muhammad? What does this portrait reveal about his role in Islam? The Star portrays Muhammad as God’s companion and servant, (Lualdi 137). Muhammad is the closest being to God, he is a conduit bringing messages from God to the people of Islam, “A messenger of God reciting pages that are pure” (Lualdi 139). 3. The rejection of Islam by many Jews & Christians (“peoples of the book”) in Arabia surprised and disappointed Muhammad since he brought his message in the name of the tradition of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. How does the Testament give expression to these feelings and, at the same time, defend the truth of Muhammad’s revelations? The testament specifically states, “Those who deny the faith…are in Jahannam’s fire, eternal fire” (Lualdi 139). Jahannam’s fire is hell, those who reject Islamic beliefs. 4. What defining features of religion are articulated in the Opening and the Testament? What similarities and differences do you see? In the Opening there is plenty said in support of God and why people should have faith in God, “Praise be to God, lord sustainer of the worlds” (Lualdi 138). The Testament, however, mentions more on those who do not support God and where they are. Doc 9.1 General Capitulary for the Missi 1. What does this document reveal about Charlemagne’s vision of himself and his empire? In what ways were his Christian beliefs central to both? Charlemagne’s vision was centered around loyalty to Christian beliefs and principles which he combined with a well-structured central power. “…to live wholly in the holy service of God and in accordance with his own promise…” (Lualdi 156).
2. Why might Charlemagne have considered it necessary for all freemen to swear an oath of fidelity to him as emperor? How was the notion of fidelity crucial to the success of his government? Charlemagne considered it important to preserve the Kingdom, if all freemen were loyal to God then it was an easy translation to be loyal to the Kingdom. 3. What do the articles suggest about the means by which Charlemagne sought to unify his empire? Charlemagne sought to unify his empire through religion, all believed in God.
