Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A. I have read Acts 19:11-22 in both a formal translation (NASB, NRSV
, ESV, or CSB)
and a functional translation (NIV,
NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer.
Please use the translation provided in your digital library or found at
Biblegateway.com.

B.
Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at
least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover
this story. These similarities and differences should be related to the text
itself rather than the translation. For example, an observation like, “The
formal translation is harder to read” is not an acceptable observation
because it deals with the translation itself rather than the text. You may list as
many similarities as possible and differences that you find providing that you
meet the minimum amount for each one.
1.
Similarity – Both translations depict the miracles and wonders performed by
Paul, emphasizing their profound impact on the people of Ephesus.
2.
Similarity – They both highlight the incident with the seven sons of Sceva,
illustrating the consequences of their failed attempt to imitate Paul's
exorcism.
3.
Difference – In verse 13, the ESV translation describes the traveling Jews
as "itinerant Jewish exorcists," while the NLT translation describes them as
"a group of Jews who were traveling from town to town.
4.
Difference - In verse 14, the ESV translation describes Sceva as "a Jewish
high priest," while the NLT translation describes him as "a leading priest."
5.
Difference -
In verse 19, the ESV translation states that the value of the
books of sorcery was "50,000 pieces of silver," while the NLT translation
estimates their value as "several million dollars."

C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying.
1.
Main characters: (List them)
Paul, Local Jews and Greeks of Ephesus, and Seven Sons of Sceva
2. Plot: (50-100 words)
The narrative in Acts 19:11–22 takes place in the city of Ephesus during the ministry of
the apostle Paul. Paul has a reputation for performing incredible miracles, curing
illnesses, and expelling out evil spirits.. The miracles performed by Paul were so
powerful that even when people touched his handkerchiefs or aprons, they were healed.
A group of Jewish exorcists, inspired by Paul's miracles, try to replicate his actions by
using the name of Jesus in their exorcisms. However, the evil spirit they are trying to
exorcise recognizes their lack of genuine authority and attacks them instead. As news of
this incident spreads, it leads to a significant response from those who practice magic in
Ephesus. Many of them confess their deeds and publicly burn their scrolls. This series
of events leads to the spread and strengthening of the word of God in the region,
serving as a powerful demonstration of the authority and power of the name of Jesus as
preached by Paul.
3. Story structure: (50-100 words)
Note: Plot and Story Structure are not the same
thing (see the tutorial and student example)
