When Worlds Collide – Science and Spirituality
Hi everyone and God bless you all. This first week of the class we will discuss the
difference between faith and science. After watching the videos and reading the assignment for
this week's session I answered the following questions:
Can the scientific method be used to support claims that God created the
earth or the existence of God? Why or why not?
The relationship between science and religion has been a topic constantly debated in
different fields by professionals.
The statement that everyone agrees with is that the
universe was precisely designed and some scientific methods can be used to support that
claim. The truth is that science does not have the power to recognize or disapproved the
existence of God. The textbook Biology: Concepts and Investigation describes that life
can be distinguished by a group of characteristics, “organization, energy use, internal
constancy, reproduction and development, and evolution” (Hoefnagels 2021 p.18). I think
that the question that everyone needs to ask themselves is if God does not create the
universe, then, who, what, or why it did do it? The only reference I have to answer that
question is the Bible and that is what I used for my spiritual guidance.
What is the difference between faith and science? Can faith and science
coexist?
As the Bible explains our body consists of soul, body, and spirit. Science and faith can
coexist. James 2:26 New International Version says, "As the body without the spirit is
dead, so faith without deeds is dead". The Scriptures constantly remind us that our bodies
cannot work properly if we don’t have a balance in our physical and spiritual aspects of
life. Simple, science oversees our physical world and faith oversees our spiritual aspect of
life.
When can we trust science and what should we look for to determine if a
scientific finding or claim can be trusted?
We can trust science and determine that is true by searching if the claim has good
references, was properly developed by professionals in the field, and came from a reliable
source.
Remember to keep moving forward and blessings,
Yamil
