Instructions:
For this assignment, you will be studying a story from the Gospels. You will use the template
below in order to complete a study of this passage. In your study, you will use the skills of
Observation, Interpretation, Correlation, and Application.
I. Observation
A. I have read my selected passage in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or
CSB) and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. You will
find a copy of the NASB, ESV, CSB, and NLT in your myWSB Library.
o
Yes
o
No
B. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying
1. Main characters: (List them)
1. Jesus
2. Legion
3. The possessed man
2. Plot: (50-100 words)
While Jesus was crossing a Lake into the region of Gerasene, a man who was possessed by many
demons came out to meet him. The demon-possessed man asked what Jesus wanted with them,
and Jesus returned by asking what his name was. Finding out that the name of the many demons
was Legion, He commanded them to come out of the man. Legion begged Jesus to not send them
out of the area they were in, they asked if they could be put amongst the pigs seen on a nearby
hillside. With permission from Jesus, they left the man and went into the pigs. Afterward, the
herd of pigs, which was about 2000, fell off the bank into the lake and drowned. People heard of
the pigs falling off and rushed to see Jesus and the once-possessed man. People found out about
what Jesus did and were pleading for Jesus to leave the region. The once-possessed man begged
to go with him.
3. Story structure: (50-100 words)
Jesus coming to the land of Gerasene. Jesus found the possessed man. Legion begging for Jesus
to not cast him out of the area. Jesus cast the demons into the pigs, and then the pigs fell off the
cliff and drowned. People wondered and came over telling Jesus to leave the place in which they
were.
C. List basic observations about this passage.
1. Who:
-
Jesus
-
Legion
-
Gerasene people
-
Demon Possessed man.
2. What:
-
Demons had possessed a man, and no one was about to subdue him any longer.
3. Where:
-
The region of Gerasene
4. When:
-
Around 50-70 C.E
5. Why:
- To show that God is one who will protect us no matter how bad it looks. It looked as if no
one could help this man anymore, no one knew what to do. Chains were not strong enough to
hold him anymore. Jesus’ disciples were telling Jesus to keep his distance from this place for
there were so many unclean spirits residing there. He is the ultimate healer during the chaos and
rejection that might seem to be happening. He is always showing acceptance to those that we
would look at and say “no” to.
6. How:
-
By casting the demons out, in Jesus’ name. Jesus stated, “Come out of this man, you
impure spirit.” Demons are scared, they fear God because they know the power that he
holds. Nothing can triumph over God’s powerfulness, not even demons.
II. Interpretation
A. Determine the author’s main point. In 1-2 paragraphs (100-400 words) explain what you
think the author is trying to communicate in this passage.
Believe it or not, this passage is my favorite out of the whole Bible, and it has been since I first
read it as a little girl. Knowing that God is fearful enough and loving enough to take a step into a
place he knows that he will not be welcome but doing it for just you. It takes me back to the
passage that talks about how he will leave the 99 to come after the 1. He takes the first step, even
when we don’t want him to. He is not scared of the demons, but he speaks, and they listen. It
gives us to do the same with the armor of God. To have that power as well to rebuke impure
spirits in Jesus’ name. I feel as if the author of this was making a point of how God will always
go after you and be there in a time of need. When it looks like you are too far gone, Jesus is there
with his hands out, reaching for us to just take that step towards him.
B. Based on your answer above, write out one principle from this passage. You should be able
to express this principle in 1-3 sentences.
I feel as if the principle of the passage, Mark 5:1-18 is that we must have enough faith and trust
in Jesus because God sent Him to save us. Jesus shows us His authority. Nothing can bind Jesus,
nothing can control Him. He was sent for us to save us, and he will.
III. Correlation
A. How does this passage fit within the metanarrative of the Bible? State

what type of story you believe this to be (creation, fall, redemption, or new creation), and
explain why you believe this to be so. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200
words) in length.
I believe that Mark 5:1-18 is a part of the redemption metanarrative. Not only is Jesus, through
God, redeeming the possessed man, but if you read further down, He tells the man to stay and
tell the people of Gadarenes about what all the Lord did for him, and the man did just that. We
always say that we never know who we affect when we share the gospel. We do not ever really
learn about the long term affects that might have happened once departed from a person you
were sharing the gospel with. I like to believe that this man was sent out to spread the Gospel and
talk about what the Lord had did, but besides that, I like to this he was a man on a mission. A
mission to share with everyone what the Lord had did, the feelings, the sights he saw, I believe
that because of him sharing his testimony, people came to Christ, and we will one day see them
in Heaven. I like to believe this because, he was what we would have seen as too far gone, no
one in all ten cities were able to help him. But God, through Jesus and the disciples did, and that
is the reason I believe that this metanarrative fits very well with the redemption category.
B.
How does the principle you discovered in the text fit with the overall message of Scripture?
This principle is the one you have written out in 1-3 sentences in the Interpretation section. If
your principle is a true Biblical principle it will be reflected throughout the Scriptures. Where is
the principle discovered in this New Testament narrative found elsewhere in the Scriptures? Your
explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length.
C. How does this passage reflect the person and work of Jesus Christ?
State and explain at least one way that the principle of this passage identifies something
of the person and work of Jesus Christ. Your explanation should be 1 paragraph (100-200
words) in length.
IV. Application
What points of application can be made using the Four Questions for Application? State and
explain 1 point of application for each of these four questions. Your explanation for each of
these points should be 1 paragraph (100-200 words) in length.
A. The question of duty
B. The question of character
C. The question of goals
D. The question of discernment
