After viewing one of the films listed in the "Topic 1 Discussion Question Film Resource" from
the topic Resources, answer the following questions:
What is the title of the movie you viewed for this DQ?
What is one worldview depicted in the movie?
Which characters held that worldview (e.g., pantheism, theism, atheism)?
Provide at least two quotes or scene descriptions from the movie to defend your points.
This film aims to present faith and theism as worldviews. Eli was later shown to be blind, and the
book turned out to be the final copy of the current King James Version of the Bible. The movie's
lesson is that if you have good faith, God will guide you and help you in your search. This film
makes it clear that the path of God will be both easy and fraught with difficulties. To defend the
religion, we start to guard the actual book while ignoring its message and teachings. As a result,
we turn into blind followers with blind faith. When we reach the end of our lives, we start to
remember and pass on our memorization to the following generation. Eli was discovered to have
memorized the entire book while being blind, which suggests that when we hold a belief dear to
our hearts, we forget the actual teaching of that belief and end up becoming blind in the process.
When Solara heard Eli say, "Grace," she saw that she and her mother had a habit of repeating the
same thing after hearing it. That indicates that they accepted it without a doubt. Eli claimed that
the voice that held the concept that if one is strong enough in his faith and believes without
hesitation, he can overcome challenges and, in turn, he will be rewarded, was helping and
guiding him. Eli said that he reads the book every day and that, to preserve the book, he has
forgotten its lessons. With Tanah's Hebrew Bible, which has the Old Testament on one side, the
Bible in the middle, and the Quran on the teachings, the film's conclusion portrays a message of
peace. I walk by faith, not by sight, is the opening movie quotation. "I was carrying it and
reading it every day, got so caught up in guarding it; I neglected to live by what I'd learned from
it," the second quotation reads. These two quotations, which Eli related to Solara, illustrate faith
and the failure to put what was read into practice.
