Spurgeon Reflection 3 Everett Nelson Tye CHMN 679: Capstone November 10, 2023
Spurgeon was a strong example that church leaders should follow, especially when considering the way by which he led and included his congregation. The reason for this was the many convictions that he had about how he should be as a leader of a church. One of these convictions was his great desire to follow God. Among the commands of Jesus given to His people was to make disciples of men and to teach them all that Jesus commanded." His conviction to obey the commands of God led him to not just speak to his congregation but to lead them by being among them.? Something else that Spurgeon strongly believed was that all are capable of being theologians and active church members. This belief was solidified in him through his experiences in the Lay Preachers’ Association. After having moved on, he later conducted his training program which was very similar to the Lay Preachers’ Association which he held with the college men within his church.’ From this, church leaders should understand that we have a responsibility to trust others within our church with much. While we may be able to preach, teach, evangelize, and conduct outreach better than these other people, God has put the church together intending to use the members within it to accomplish his work. Further, Scripture clearly defines the role of the church leaders to equip lay people to be leaders. If a pastor or some other leader in the church cannot delegate and develop, they are missing a large part of what the church is to be that Spurgeon clearly understood.* Bibliography 1 Matthew 28:16-20.
