In our reflection this week you need to review the different temptation accounts of
Jesus in Matthew and Luke. Then answer the below questions.
1.Which order makes the most sense to you and why?
Jesus was tempted three times in the Bible. Matthew and Luke both give an account of the
temptation of Jesus, but they have some differences in the order of the temptations presented to
Jesus. I think that Matthew account makes the most sense because he uses words that represent
chronological order in his passage more than Luke did. Matthew uses the word “then” and Luke
uses the word “and”. Lukes’s account does not imply that it is in chronological order as much as
Matthew’s passage. I also believe that they are speaking to different audiences with their
passages that make them highlight the events in different ways.
2.Do you think Jesus was “really” tempted?
Yes, I think Jesus was really tempted and the accounts in the Bible are people retelling the story
of what Jesus described as happening to him when he was in the wilderness being tempted.
3.Could he have given in to those temptations?
He could have but he did not. This is to represent that every person has a choice. You can be
faithful or unfaithful to God. Jesus teaches us to use the Holy scripture to resist the temptations
of sin. Jesus has a choice, and he chose to stay faithful to his father. He refused to use his power
as the son of God to his own advantage. This teaches us that Jesus understands the temptations
we are faced with but teaches us to trust in God to resist them like he did.
4.What can we learn from these stories about fighting temptation in our own lives?
We can learn to ask God for guidance and deliverance from temptations of sin in our lives. We
can follow Jesus’s example of how to resist temptations in our lives. An example is Jesus was
hungry but resisted the devil’s temptation to turn stone into bread because God’s word tells us
“Man should not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”
(Matthew 4:4). He chose to trust God. He quoted God words and let that guided his decisions to
not give in to the temptations of the devil.
