W01 Gospel Research and Insight
Name: Instructions
Follow the steps below to complete this activity. Save this document with your name in the file name. When you have completed this activity and answered all the questions, follow the instructions in your course to submit the document for grading and feedback.
Step 01
Carefully read the Explanatory Introduction and Section 1 of the Doctrine and Covenants considering the following question: "What does the Lord (section 1) and His prophets (Explanatory Introduction) want you to know and understand about the Doctrine and Covenants prior to and throughout your study of the Doctrine and Covenants?" Step 02
Using 500-600 words
, write a paper in which you identify 6 specific insights that answer the question asked in step 01. Three of the insights must come from the Explanatory Introduction, and three must come from section 1. For each insight identified, explain why you think the reason is significant for readers to know and understand as they study this sacred text.
D&C Introduction
1.
In the beginning of the introduction, it states that it is a “collection of divine revelations...
for the establishment of the kingdom of God.” It goes on to say that these writings are not
only for the Church but for the entire human race. This reminds me of "The Family: A Proclamation to the World." The messages inspired by the prophet are for everyone on Earth because his words are of the Lord. These messages are meant to help everyone improve themselves so that we may return to our Heavenly Father.
2.
Within the introduction, it states that the messages are “tender but firm.” This is because these warnings are especially for this last dispensation, so we may prepare for His second
coming. Right now, the members of the Church have a sacred duty to fulfill the promise given in the Old Testament that we will gather scattered Israel. This work predestined for us is critical, and the Doctrine and Covenants will provide "instructions" given by the Lord. Just like any instructions, if they are not followed, they can be ruined.
3.
It is imperative that the reader comprehends that the insights were obtained via prayer. This book demonstrates that the prophet Joseph Smith and his followers sought and were granted divine direction. We need to know this because receiving personal revelation in these latter days is crucial for us. "In the coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the influence of the Holy Ghost," stated President Nelson. Pure revelation can be found in the Doctrine and Covenants, and we are eligible to receive the same gift.
D&C Section 1
1.
The phrase "Book of His commands" alludes to the doctrine and covenants mentioned in verse 6 as belonging to the Lord. It was the prophets' and his apostles' responsibility to make this known so that we would gain from His teachings. This is crucial to understand because everything in this book from the temple covenants to the word of wisdom is a commandment from the Lord. These are not recommendations; rather, they are what we need to construct Zion.
2.
Verse 30 states that throughout these terrible, latter days, there will be a path out of darkness through the instructions given. This church is the only authentic, active church on earth, according to what the Lord said. Whether or not the reader attends church, this matters to them all since the Savior Himself attested to it. We have the whole gospel, which enables us to get back to Him, even when other churches might just offer a portion of the truth.
3.
The final nugget of wisdom comes from a probably more well-known verse 38, which states, "Whether by my own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same." This verse is very significant because it contains statements from the Lord himself via the voices of the prophet and apostles of today. If the prophet of today has instructions for us to follow, it is because the Savior has commanded us to. The reason this is written is because the church's leaders genuinely care about us. These commandments are given to us in order for all of us to be blessed more.
Step 03
Reflect on the insights you gained this week. Write a 150-250 word paragraph
; describe what the single most powerful insight
was that came to you as you studies this week’s revelations and what you hope to do with it.
Your paragraph should contain:
o
A description of what stood out to you.
o
What you hope to do better as a result of this new or deeper understanding you have been given.
Here are some questions to consider in writing this paragraph:
o
Was there a particular “one-liner” in these revelations that captures your greatest insight?
o
What was your biggest “aha” moment in studying these revelations?
o
What do you hope to do better as a result of what you have studied?
In studying this week's revelations from the Doctrine and Covenants, a particular phrase that stood out to me was from the D&C Introduction, emphasizing that the messages are "tender but firm." This balance struck me as an essential aspect of divine guidance, offering both compassion and clarity. My biggest "aha" moment came in realizing the urgency conveyed in Section 1 about the path out of darkness provided through instructions in these latter days. The phrase "Whether by my own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same" from Section 1:38 resonated deeply, underlining the significance of heeding the counsel of modern-day prophets and leaders. With this new understanding, I hope to cultivate a more receptive heart to divine guidance, recognizing the tenderness and firmness in the messages provided. I aim to better align my actions with the commandments outlined in the Doctrine and Covenants, understanding that these instructions are given out of genuine care for our spiritual well-being. This week's study has inspired me to be more diligent in applying the revealed principles to enhance my spiritual growth and strengthen my connection with the divine.
