Philippians 2:1-4 says, “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ,
if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Here are some of my findings:
Questions and Answers:
There are no questions asked, neither are there answers. General to Specific and Specific to General:
Paul desired unity in the Philippian church so they could carry on the ministry of the gospel. The vitality of Philippians 2:1-4 is “make my joy complete” (v.2). One completes joy by being of the same mind, being on one accord, putting others first, counting them as more significant than ourselves, and avoiding selfishness. Dialogue:
There is no dialogue.
Purpose/Result Statements:
Unity in Christ would bring harmonious relationships among believers. Paul’s purpose for writing would be for Christians to be united in love, humility, and like-mindedness. Means
(by which something is accomplished): One completes joy by means of humbly considering others as more significant than themselves, and simply looking into their interests more than our own. Conditional Clauses: I have found that the conditions mentioned in verse one lead to the results found in verse two. In verse one, there are four conditional clauses that Paul mentions- if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any comfort from his love, if there is any common sharing in the Spirit, and if any affection and compassion. Actions of God and People: Our Savior, Jesus Christ, is an example of how to treat others, and because we are unified with Jesus Christ, so should our character and actions line up with His. This means our actions should bring Joy to completion, have the same love, be on one accord, be
humble, be like-minded in Christ, consider others as more significant, and observe our interests and the interests of others. Tone: The tone of the passage in Philippians is one of exhortation and encouragement to the Philippian church. Emotional Terms: The emotional terms in this paragraph are comfort, compassion, joy, love, encouragement, fellowship, and tenderness. 1
Unless otherwise stated, all Bible references are from the New International Version (Colorado Springs: Biblica,

For me to make any of these observations, I had to meditate on His Word. In Grasping God’s Word, Duvall and Hays would agree that “to be effective in serving God…we must be obedient to His Word and meditate on it constantly.”

Meditating on God’s Word helps to apply the meaning of God’s Word to our lives. It can also increase our faith, grow in wisdom, and help us understand the meaning of God’s word. We must train ourselves to look for the purpose within the context of the Bible and observe the repetition. We must possess “certain competencies and must work with the correct and accurate methodology.” 3
