Chapter 1 1. What is the traditional evangelical position regarding the canon? The traditional evangelical view affirms God created the canon. Though the church was not instrumental in the creation of the canon, the church was in the position to recognize the canon. The Holy Spirit and God created the inspiration for the scripture, as leaving the ultimate authority to them versus the church. 2. Did apocryphal Gospel ever circulate within the canonical Gospel? There is no documented evidence that the apocryphal Gospel ever circulated within the canonical Gospel even though there is a great number of Greek manuscripts of the canonical Gospels. The authors indicate the apocryphal Gospel was not patronized by the orthodox and quickly fell out of favor. Chapter 2 1. What is the significance of the following events or books for the NT? a. The Assyrian exile of Israel (the northern kingdom) - The Northern Kingdom ended and never reestablished as the Jews had lost their national sovereignty. This was labeled as "The Great Crisis" after King Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the temple built by Solomon. b. The Babylonian exile of Judah (the southern kingdom) - The Jews came to live in close proximity of the Gentiles after the monarch was dissolved, leading them to disperse focusing on the morality of God's law. Due to exile, the Jews resulted to idolatry, worshiping other Gods than Yahweh. c. The conquest of Alexander the Great- Alexander the Great conquered his empire within 13 years and declared the new world ruler. The collapse of the Persian Empire through and the ideals of religious freedom and self-identity, Jews would face various Grecian rulers who did believed their culture was superior to the lands currently occupied by the Jews. This was called the "Second Great Crisis." 2. What was the name of the Greek ruler who erected a statue of Zeus in the Jerusalem temple, and when did this event take place? The ruler was Antiochus during the Seleucid or Syrian Period of 198-167 BC. 3. What are the years of rule for the following Roman emperors? a. Augustus- 31/27 BC to AD 14 b. Tiberius- AD 14 to AD 37 c. Nero- AD 54 to AD 68 d. Domitian- AD 81 to AD 96 4. When did the Romans destroy the Jerusalem temple? The Roman's destroyed the Jerusalem temple in 70 AD and it is known as the "Fifth Great Crisis." 5. What are the three major Jewish sects active in first-century Judaism? The three major sects are: The Pharisees, The Sadducees, and the Zealots. 6. What was the name of the Jewish ruling council? The Sanhedrin was labeled as the Jewish supreme council. This council consisted of rulers, chief priest, elders, and scribes, with approximately 70 members, though the number could not always be consistent. Chapter 3
3. What are the two major possibilities regarding the relationship between the Synoptic Gospels? Per the text, the literary relationship between the Synoptic Gospels are explained with the theory of the Markan priority or the Griesbach (Two-Gospel) hypothesis. 4. In what order were the Gospels written according to the two-Gospel hypothesis? According to the Two-Gospel hypothesis by Griesbach, Matthew was the source for Luke and Mark with Luke coming second, and then Mark third. 5. In what order were the Gospels written according to the Markan priority view? The Markan view indicates that Mark wrote first as he has more "material and verbatim" without comparison verbiage like Matthew and Luke. The argument with this theory is many believe Mark used both Matthew and Luke's verbiage to form his dialogue.
