Stephen Smallman Book Report
To begin with, the story began with the author, Stephen Smallman, recounting his experience and a long walk he took through the wilderness. We will discover Stephen primary focus of his book, what he was trying to accomplish and why I recommend this book to others.
First, Stephen Smallman primary focus of the book is for us to follow Jesus. Stephen focused on discipleship. We are encouraged to follow the Savior on a mission and honor him with our lives. Stephen reflects on why we are here and what is our person here on earth. He reflects on what we should be doing with our time here and whether we are fulfilling our purpose in life. The book maintains clear focus on following Jesus.
Smallman helps us to understand how conversion. We all must come the same way by repenting and believing but our conversion experience is different. Smallman paints a picture of
discipleship living in community and working to make disciples, a picture of our dependence upon one another to live the life Christ calls us to in the word. The call to discipleship in our daily lives is the call to understand that the gospel changes everything. Smallman said “there is no such thing as a Christian who is not a disciple and there is no disciple who is not a follower of
Jesus in all that Jesus provides in the gospel.”
Secondly, the author was trying to let us know that The Walk is a book written for those who have expressed a desire to follow Jesus as disciples. Stephen also speaks to those who were raised Christian and are wondering how to develop their faith. The walk is designed to be used and read it is helpful for those who want to read for themselves. Smallman defines disciple as a person who is dedicating to learning the way and following the example of a teacher or master.
He also states that a disciple is one who has heard the call of Jesus and responding by repenting, believing and following the gospel of Jesus. Smallman believes that the idea that they should preach the gospel to themselves seems to firmly establish in many evangelical churches. Most have said that preaching the gospel to themselves essentially means repeating the great truth of justification repeatedly. This is the rock of salvation. There can be no doubt that the revelation of God’s grace is all truth. Smallman believes that discipleship is so much more important than books and programs.
The author is talking to new believers and people who need renewal. With the gospel of Mark Smallman focus on the beginning of the gospel: justification, sanctification, adoption, and glorification. He also uses Romans to explore the obedience of faith the gospel requires before
moving Acts to consider our calling to be disciples who make disciples.
My evaluation of the book is that it was written in an easy-to-read style with different stories and examples from real life. This has been a source of encouragement for me during some
difficult times in my life. It was refreshing and enlightening. The Word of God is real and true. We can grow and learn from this book. It causes you to realize that our purpose is to serve the Lord and make disciples. We hear the word of God repeatedly, yet we still do not obey the word of God. Sometimes, we must be reminded and understand the will of God. This book was a blessing. The Walk is a good book and I agree with the outlined assertion. It was in order, and it was the truth according to the word of God. Smallman always referred to the word of God and gave examples of the disciples in the bible in how they obeyed the call of Jesus drop their nets and began to follow Jesus. I will recommend this book to others because it’s a good book and it is for those that are new believers and those that need a renewal. This book gives you a clear understanding of who Jesus is and what he came here on earth to do. He is the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God and came to preach the gospel the good news. Smallman made it clear to us in his book and explained what a disciple is. I think we ask the question do I have to go to church to be a disciple. Smallman said “yes” and I agree. So many people want to walk this Christian walk by themselves and do whatever they want but we need to be discipled and make disciples.
Smallman made it clear that we need to pray and read our bibles so that we can grow and get to know God for ourselves. The Holy Spirits gives life to the word of God and those of us that are called of God he gives us power in Jesus. Our love for God must be sincere. In 1Cor.13 tells us if we do not have love, we are nothing and that we can have all the gifts and talents but if we
do not have love, we are nothing. I believe when Smallman wrote this book it was out of love and concern for God’s people. He wanted the reader to understand the things of God and to understand discipleship. We can talk love, but it must come from a heart that really loves Jesus. When I see teachers teach the Word of God you can feel the passion, they have teaching. Our love for Jesus must be developed by praying and reading the word of God daily. This book was easy to understand and
follow. Love is the fulfillment of the law. The Great Commission is Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Go ye therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and the Son, and the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
