W03 Gospel Research and Insight
Name: Hunter Browning
Introduction
Joseph Smith referred to section 88 as the "
olive leaf . . . plucked from the Tree of Paradise, the Lord's message of peace to us
"
(
see heading to section 88
). Earlier in the revelations the Lord taught Oliver Cowdery that "peace"
was one of the greatest witnesses one could receive from God (
see section 6:23
). In the Book of Mormon, Abinadi emphasizes Isaiah's prophecies to publish peace and testifies that Jesus Christ is the "founder of peace"
(
see Mosiah 15:14-
18).
Martin Harris had learned by revelation through Joseph that if he would "learn" of the Savior, "listen" to God's words, and "walk in the meekness" of the Spirit that he would have "peace"
in Christ (
see section 19:23
). Instructions

Step 01
What three "
messages of peace
"
do you see the Lord revealing to His saints through this revelation (section 88)? Discover at least one "message of peace" in each of the following blocks of scripture for this revelation. Explain what the message is and how it contributes to your understanding of peace.
a.
D&C 88:1-50 (50-75 words)
In the first block of scripture (D&C 88:1-17), the Lord reveals the importance of seeking learning and wisdom. The message of peace here is that through knowledge and understanding, individuals can find tranquility amidst life's uncertainties. The pursuit of learning is presented as a source of enlightenment that brings comfort and serenity.
In the next block (D&C 88:18-33), the Lord emphasizes the principle of light and truth. The message of peace is that embracing and living by these divine principles leads to clarity and
a sense of purpose. Light dispels darkness, and truth dispels confusion, offering a pathway to inner peace.
In the third block (D&C 88:34-50), the Lord instructs on the importance of consecration and stewardship. The message of peace conveyed is that when individuals selflessly
contribute
to the welfare of others and responsibly manage their resources, a harmonious and equitable community is established, fostering peace through
unity and shared well-being.
b.
D&C 88:51-116 (50-75 words)
In D&C 88:51-70, the Lord emphasizes the importance of virtue and holiness. The message of peace here is that cultivating moral purity and living a virtuous life brings a sense of inner
calm and spiritual tranquility. By adhering to principles of righteousness, individuals can find
peace in their relationship with God and within themselves.
Moving on to D&C 88:71-86, the Lord discusses the resurrection and the promise of eternal life. The message of peace is that through faith in Jesus Christ and the assurance of resurrection, believers can find solace in the hope of eternal joy and reunion with loved ones, transcending the fear of death.
Finally, in D&C 88:87-116, the Lord speaks of preparing for the Second Coming. The message of peace is that by diligently following the counsel and commandments given, individuals can find confidence and serenity in the knowledge that they are prepared for the Savior's return, leading to a sense of peace in the face of future uncertainties.
c.
D&C 88:117-141 (50-75 words)
In D&C 88:117-126, the Lord emphasizes the concept of consecration and stewardship. The message of peace is that as individuals willingly consecrate their time, talents, and resources to the service of God and others, a sense of unity and communal well-being emerges. The act of consecration fosters peace through shared responsibility and caring for one another.
In D&C 88:127-137, the Lord encourages diligence in temporal and spiritual pursuits. The message of peace is that a balanced and industrious life, where individuals attend to both their secular and religious duties, leads to a sense of order and fulfillment. This balanced diligence contributes to inner peace and harmony.
In D&C 88:138-141, the Lord assures the faithful of His constant watchfulness. The message of peace is that God is mindful of His children, providing comfort and security. The knowledge of His vigilant care instills confidence and peace in the hearts of believers, knowing they are not alone in their earthly journey

Step 02
What four "
messages of peace
"
do you see revealed in the four other sections studied for this unit? Again, explain what the message is and how it contributes to your understanding of peace.
a.
D&C 86 (50-75 words)
D&C 86 addresses the parable of the wheat and tares. In verses 5-7, the Lord conveys a message of peace through the assurance that in the final judgment, the righteous will be gathered and preserved while the wicked will be burned. This message contributes to the understanding of peace by emphasizing divine justice, assuring believers that God will ultimately separate good from evil, providing comfort and certainty about the ultimate resolution of the world's challenges and conflicts.
b.
D&C 87 (50-75 words)
In D&C 87, the Lord prophesies about wars and tumults in the last days. The message of peace lies in the understanding that though challenges and conflicts will arise, God is aware
and in control. By acknowledging the signs of the times and remaining faithful, believers can
find peace in the knowledge that God's purposes will prevail, and ultimately, a greater peace
will be established through His divine plan for the redemption of His people.
c.
D&C 89 (50-75 words)
D&C 89, the Word of Wisdom, imparts a message of peace through the revelation of principles for health and well-being. By abstaining from harmful substances and adopting a diet centered on wholesome foods, individuals can experience physical and spiritual blessings. The message contributes to peace by promoting harmony between the body and spirit, fostering a sense of well-being. Obeying these guidelines brings the assurance of God's care for both temporal and spiritual aspects of life, cultivating peace in faithful adherence.
d.
D&C 90 (50-75 words)
D&C 90 addresses the organization of the Church and the authority given to leaders. The message of peace lies in the establishment of order and governance. By recognizing divine authority and following appointed leaders, members find assurance in the structured guidance provided. This organizational clarity contributes to peace within the Church community, ensuring unity and coherence in carrying out God's work. The Lord's counsel in Section 90 brings a sense of stability and direction, fostering tranquility among the Saints.
Step 03
From your identified list of "
messages of peace,
"
consider and write what you see the Lord is teaching about peace that you feel could most beneficial those living in the world during troubled times? Also consider which of the messages of peace have already blessed you in your life? How? Which of the messages of peace would you like to more personally experience and understand? Write your response in 150-250 words.
The message of peace from D&C 87, the prophecy on war, is particularly relevant for those living in troubled times. The counsel to pray for peace amidst the foreseen conflicts emphasizes the reliance on divine intervention. In a world filled with uncertainties and unrest, seeking solace through prayer provides a sense of control and connection
with a higher power, promoting inner tranquility.
Personally, the message of peace from D&C 89, the Word of Wisdom, has blessed me. Adhering to principles of health and well-being outlined in this revelation has positively impacted my physical and spiritual life. The Word of Wisdom promotes balance and mindfulness, contributing to a sense of overall well-being and peace of mind.
I aspire to more deeply understand and experience the message of peace from D&C 90, which addresses the organization of the Church and the authority given to leaders. In times of personal and collective uncertainty, a clearer understanding of divine governance and trust in appointed leaders would bring a
heightened sense of spiritual security and peace into my life. Embracing the principles of order and leadership outlined in this section would undoubtedly contribute to a more profound connection with divine guidance and a greater sense of peace in navigating life's challenges.
