I was struck by this verse: "And, finding there was greater

and peace and rest for me, I sought for the blessings of the
fathers,"
I feel like we all get to this point when we yearn deeply for the same level of
closeness with God and our righteous ancestors. The literal acceptance of
this covenant can be achieved through our sealings. It's an interesting thing
to consider yearning for the covenant of sealing more than you perhaps
yearn for companionship. Motivated more by the same things that Abraham
was when he asked for these promises. In the latter-days so much priority is
placed on romance, and though that's important and good it's interesting to
consider marriage more through this lens.
Reminds me of this quote from Elder Christofferson: "Bonhoeffer was a
prolific writer, and some of his best-known pieces are letters that
sympathetic guards helped him smuggle out of prison, later published
as
Letters and Papers from Prison.
One of those letters was to his niece before her wedding. It included these
significant insights: “Marriage is more than your love for each other. … In
your love you see only your two selves in the world, but in marriage you are
a link in the chain of the generations, which God causes to come and to pass
away to his glory, and calls into his kingdom. In your love you see only the
heaven of your own happiness, but in marriage
you are placed at a post
of responsibility towards the world and mankind
. Your love is your own
private possession, but
marriage is more than something personal—it
is a status, an office. Just as it is the crown, and not merely the will
to rule, that makes the king, so it is marriage
, and not merely your love
for each other, that joins you together in the sight of God and man. … So
love comes from you, but marriage from above, from God.”
I loved your point about having a desire to have a level of closeness to God. I think
we all come to a point in our lives where we have to decide who are we going to
follow or get close to. We all have to come to the conclusion that we have only one
master that we can serve and we must make the conscious effort to choose Him
everyday. I thought it was such a good point that we must be close to God to be
able to reap the happiness that He so desires us to be able to experience
I loved the readings this week because they reminded me of my patriarchal blessing
and the temple. We are still blessed today because Abraham sought the blessings of
His fathers. A verse from the Book of Abraham chapter 1 that stood out to me was
18. This verse says "Behold, I will lead thee by my hand, and I will take thee, to put
upon thee my name, even the Priesthood of thy father, and my power shall be over
thee." I loved this because it reminded me that Christ is always with us, will be with
us, and has been with us since the beginning. Christ's atonement has extended
since He was Jehovah of the Old Testament times and continues beyond and
through eternity. His power is available to us through the Priesthood and we have
access through our righteousness and our faithfulness.
Lily, I like what you share but one of the things I learned from the patriarchal
blessing, is considered a personal and inspired declaration of an individual's lineage
within the House of Isreal and a glimpse into their potential spiritual gift, talents,
and blessings. I think the patriarchal blessing in our lives can encompass a wide
range of aspects, including guidance for one's life journey, insights into personal
strengths and weaknesses, promises related to family relationships and posterity,
and a vision of the individual's role in God's plan. However, these blessings are seen
as personalized and may offer encouragement, comfort, and direction tailored to
the specific needs and circumstances of the recipient. But above all, the patriarchal
blessings is to provide spiritual guidance and insight to help the individual navigate
their lives in harmony with God's plan.
