Skills Exercise 3: Finding and Evaluating Books Directions: Select one of the following five topics and scenarios. You will use this scenario to locate a relevant, non-fiction book that would be appropriate for college research and complete Parts 1-3 below. Tip: Use Advanced Search on the URI Libraries home page and change the Format to “Books” so that you don’t have articles, book reviews, and other sources showing up in your results list. Happiness : For a psychology class, you want to do research on whether one’s level of happiness can change based on different habits, experiences, or practices. You need more recent research, so you’re looking for a book that has been published within the last ten years. Gambling : For a political science course, you’re conducting research on policies related to gambling. You’re specifically interested in research that has been published since the Great Recession, which ended around 2009. Artificial intelligence : In a business course, you’ve been talking about how businesses are using AI, and you’re really interested in the ethical implications of this work. Because technology evolves so rapidly, you’re looking to find a book published within the last five years that focuses on artificial intelligence and ethical considerations. Social justice : You’re taking a sociology class in which you’ve been exploring the evolution of social justice movements over the last seventy years. For your research, you want to explore how educators are integrating discussions of social justice into the classroom. You can focus either on education broadly or more specific disciplines (e.g. music education or teaching literature), but you know you need to find a book that includes trends from the past ten years. Citizen science : For a biology course, you’ve decided that you want to research how citizen science is being used to engage the general public in scientific research, and you’re looking for a book that can get you started with this research. To pass this assignment, you must: Provide a permalink and a photo (or screenshot) of the title page of a relevant, non-fiction book that would be appropriate for the selected scenario. Create a citation in APA, 7 th edition with no more than minor errors. Minor errors include mistakes like accidentally capitalizing too many words in a title, forgetting to only include the author’s first and middle initials, formatting one piece of information according to a previous edition of APA, etc. Major errors include mistakes like missing pieces of information, citing in another citation style, not using a citation style at all, or having more than three minor errors. Compose an annotation of at least 110 words that describes the source and evaluates the authority, relevance, and purpose by applying the CRAAP test. PART 1: LOCATING BOOKS IN THE LIBRARIES What scenario/topic did you select from the list above? I chose artificial intelligence.
Provide the permalink to a relevant, non-fiction book that would be appropriate for college research (see image below to make sure you snag the right link): https://uri-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/8uv2mr/TN_cdi_askewsholts_vlebooks_9780262359580 Embed a screenshot of the title page of the book ( not the cover : look for the page that has the title and publisher). How confident do you feel about your answer to Part 1? *Highlight which response you identify with the most strongly. Confident Somewhat confident Not confident
PART 2: CITING & ANNOTATING THE BOOK Start out by finding the following information: a. Author name(s) (if relevant): Dauvergne, Peter b. Editor name(s) (if relevant): c. Title of the book: AI in the Wild: Sustainability in the Age of Artificial Intelligence d. Publisher: Cambridge: MIT Press e. Date of publication: 2020 f. DOI (if available): https://doi.org/10.7551/mitpress/12350.003.0003 Create a citation for your book following the rules of the 7 th edition of the APA Manual. *Note: There is a model of a book annotation at the end of this document. Write an annotation (~125 words) that describes the source (1-2 sentences) and then evaluates the source for its quality using the CRAAP Test. Make sure to include information about the author(s) or editor(s)’s credentials and expertise, why the book is relevant to your topic and scenario, and what the purpose of the book is. How confident do you feel about your answer to Part 3? *Highlight which response you identify with the most strongly. Confident Somewhat confident Not confident Here is a model of the citation, link, and annotation if your topic was religion in ancient Japan: Citation: Como, M. (2009). Weaving and binding: Immigrant gods and female immortals in ancient Japan . University of Hawai'i Press. https://muse.jhu.edu/ Permalink: https://uri-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/8uv2mr/TN_cdi_proquest_ebookcentral_EBC3413457 Annotation: This book explores some of the recent twenty-first century archaeological findings of ritual vessels and objects from the Nara and early Heian periods of Japanese history, using these findings to argue for a new and more nuanced understanding of the relationship between Japanese Buddhism and the religious practices of continental Asia. The book is divided into seven chapters organized around different topics and themes in Japanese religion, and it aims to inform and educate experts and scholars using extensive primary sources. The author is Associate Professor of Shinto Studies and has extensive research and teaching experience that qualifies him to publish on this topic. This source is relevant to my topic as it provides current information on recent archaeological findings related to ancient Japanese religion and offers a critical analysis of previous research on this topic that needs to be reevaluated in light of recent findings. If you would like to see how this annotation meets each of the above criteria, see the color-coded version below: 1-2 sentence summary description of the book and what is included in the book. Information about the author’s or authors’ credentials and/or expertise. A sentence or two telling me (based on evaluative criteria from the CRAAP test) whether this book is relevant to your chosen topic, and if so, how and why. A sentence or so explaining what the purpose of the book is (refer to CRAAP Test).

AI in the wild talks about the potential benefits and risks of using artificial intelligence to advance global sustainability. For example, using intelligent farming equipment to increase the agriculture outputs and lower the amount of water it takes for industrial agriculture. This source has great currency and is relevant to my topic because it talks about the advantages of using artificial intelligence to explore business and ethics and was published in 2020. Peter is associated with the University of British Columbia. He is a professor of international relations. From 2009-2014 he was the director of the Liu Institute for Global Issues.
