Assignment 6 - Alcohol Assessment and Interview Written By: Joseph Salinas Date: October 12, 2023 Class: PSYC 2301-21704 Professor: Prof. Daven Salmi
Introduction: For this assignment, I conducted a mock interview with "John" using the T-ACE and Michigan Alcohol Screening Test tools to assess his alcohol use. This paper details the experience of administering these tools and provides an analysis of their strengths and weaknesses. T-ACE Tool: The T-ACE is a measurement tool consisting of four questions that aim to identify risk drinking that could potentially harm the embryo/fetus during pregnancy. T-ACE Questions: 1. How many drinks does it take to make you feel high? 0. Less than or equal to 2 drinks 1. More than 2 drinks 2. Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking? 0. No 1. Yes 3. Have you felt you ought to cut down on your drinking? 0. No 1. Yes 4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover? 0. No 1. Yes Scoring: Total Score = 1 (Calculated by summing up the values chosen for each question) Experience Administering T-ACE: During the mock interview with John, I asked him the T-ACE questions. He provided the following responses: Question 1: [1] Question 2: [0] Question 3: [0] Question 4: [0] I calculated John's T-ACE score based on his responses, which was [1]. Michigan Alcohol Screening Test: The Michigan Alcohol Screening Test is a comprehensive tool consisting of several questions to assess an individual's alcohol use and related issues.
Experience Administering Michigan Alcohol Screening Test: I also asked John the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test questions during the mock interview. Here are his responses to some of the questions: Do you feel you are a normal drinker? ("Normal" - drink as much or less than most other people) Yes – 0 No – 2 Does your wife, husband, a parent, or other near relative ever worry or complain about your drinking? Yes – 1 No – 0 Analysis of Strengths and Weaknesses: The T-ACE tool is a concise and straightforward assessment for identifying potential risk drinking during pregnancy. However, it focuses on a specific context and may not address general alcohol use. The Michigan Alcohol Screening Test provides a more comprehensive evaluation of alcohol use and related issues. However, it is longer and may be more challenging to administer. Difficult Questions: During the mock interview, John found some questions in the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test challenging, such as questions about his family's concerns and emotional problems related to alcohol. Suggestions for Future Versions: To improve the T-ACE tool, it could include additional questions to assess general alcohol use outside of pregnancy contexts. The Michigan Alcohol Screening Test might benefit from simplification to make it more user-friendly, especially for individuals who find it difficult to answer certain questions. Conclusion: In conclusion, the T-ACE and Michigan Alcohol Screening Test are valuable tools for assessing alcohol use. Their strengths and weaknesses should be considered when selecting the appropriate tool based on the specific context and the individual's comfort level with the questions. References: Selzer M.
