Heather Jameson Case Study ESSI101 Dannie S., Dannie B., Kaitlyn A., Amber K. Heather is a 7 th grade student living with her extended family. Heather loves animals and enjoys dancing to hip-hop music. Heather has a very supportive group of friends and peers but she is easily influenced by negative peer pressure and her lack of stranger awareness. Heather’s early childhood development milestones were achieved at the appropriate time. However, when she was in the 2 nd grade she was diagnosed with a learning disability. This disability effects areas of processing speed and working memory. Heather’s IQ level was 56 and she currently reads at the 4 th grade level. Heather’s least restrictive environment is the general education classroom. By being in the classroom with her peers she can meet her educational goals that are set for her by her and her team. While in the classroom Heather is given ample visual and auditory information and extra time to work with information, by doing this she is doing well in her Science, Social Studies and Elective courses. Currently Heather is performing at a reading level that is 2-3 grades below her peers. She struggles to recognize patterns and connect new information with existing knowledge. She has to practice new skills in a variety of settings to connect them with a variety of purposes. Compared to her peers, it takes Heather a lot longer to learn things and abstract concepts are often too complex for her to grasp. As far as her social-emotional skills are, she participates in a dance class with other children her age. Her dance peers are supportive in helping her learn the dances when she has difficulties. A SMART goal for Heather would be to have a story read to her every two weeks for the next 36 weeks. After each time the story is read Heather needs to reflect on what she remembers from the story. Heather’s goal is to remember 4 out of 5 key points from the story and build on her memory at the end of week 36.
Heather benefits greatly from having specific accommodations and modifications. Extra visual and auditory information is useful when Heather is learning, these items help her to focus, learn, and retain the information she is studying. Extra time is another factor that will be helpful to Heather while learning new information, by being given extra time she is able to study the materials more. Separation from the classroom or some extra quiet time could also be beneficial if Heather gets easily distracted by her peers. Service providers are a major asset when working with a student with a disability. Heather would benefit from working with a Special Education teacher and also the General Education teacher. If she doesn’t already have one Heather could use a Paraprofessional to work with daily. Heather might also work with a counselor to help with her ‘stranger danger’ skills.
